The number of terms (<strong>\u05db\u05bc\u05b0\u05d4\u05bb\u05e0\u05bc\u05d5\u05ba\u05ea<\/strong>) a local authority leader can serve is unlimited. Residents (<strong>\u05ea\u05bc\u05d5\u05b9\u05e9\u05c1\u05b8\u05d1\u05c5\u05d9\u05dd<\/strong>) can choose their leaders again and again, for unrestricted number of terms. Quite a few mayors (<strong>\u05e8\u05b8\u05d0\u05e9\u05c1\u05b5\u05d9 \u05e2\u05b8\u05e8\u05c5\u05d9\u05dd<\/strong>) in Israel, therefore, are in office for more than a decade. Some for much longer: two, three and even four decades in a row. Approximately 20% Israeli cities (<strong>\u05e2\u05b8\u05e8\u05c5\u05d9\u05dd<\/strong>) \u201317 out of 77 \u2013 are ruled by senior mayors, serving their residents already four consecutive terms.<\/p>\n<p>Shlomo Bohbot is the most veteran among them. He was chosen to be the mayor of the northern city Ma\u2019alot-Tarshiha in 1976, at the age of 34. Back then, Ma\u2019alot-Tarshiha wasn\u2019t yet a city, but a local council (<strong>\u05de\u05d5\u05b9\u05e2\u05b8\u05e6\u05b8\u05d4 \u05de\u05b0\u05e7\u05d5\u05b9\u05de\u05b4\u05d9\u05ea<\/strong>) with only 6,000 residents. Today, 42 years later, Ma\u2019alot-Tarshiha is already a city of 25,000 residents, and Bohbot was officially still the mayor as of last month.<\/p>\n<p>On October 30<sup>th<\/sup>, Israeli residents cast their ballots in the Israel municipal election (<strong>\u05d1\u05bc\u05b0\u05d7\u05b4\u05d9\u05e8\u05d5\u05b9\u05ea<\/strong>) of 2018. Bohbot, already 76 years old, didn\u2019t receive the majority of the votes, and a run-off between him and another contender (<strong>\u05de\u05b4\u05ea\u05b0\u05de\u05d5\u05b9\u05d3\u05b5\u05d3<\/strong>) will be held this month. The results will determine if Bohbot is about to break the record of Avraham Krinitzi\u00a0(1886 \u20131969) who served as the first mayor of\u00a0Ramat-Gan\u00a0for 43 years.<\/p>\n<p>Efraim Derhi, on the other hand, didn\u2019t planning on continuing his service as mayor. Derhi was chosen to lead Kfar Yona in 1977, then a local municipality and a home to 3,000 residents. Under his rule, Kfar Yona became a city in 2014 with 22,000 residents. After 41 years in office, Derhi was planning to retire. But many residents pleaded him to run again, and Derhi accepted their request. During the hectic election day, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mako.co.il\/tv-morning-news\/articles\/Article-854769c4c04c661006.htm\">he explained<\/a> why he decided to compete again only two months before the election. Yehiel\u00a0Zohar, for example, rules Netivot for almost three decades, <a href=\"https:\/\/news.walla.co.il\/item\/3195923\">received Prime Minister Netanyahu\u2019s support<\/a>, and won again. The only woman among these 17 mayors is Miriam Feirberg, the mayor of Natanya, who won again last month and is now beginning her fifth term. The most famous one is probably Ron Huldai, who serves as the mayor of Tel-Aviv for the last 20 years.
