Cost of living = <\/strong>\u05d9\u05b9\u05d5\u05e7\u05b6\u05e8 \u05d4\u05b7\u05de\u05bc\u05b4\u05d7\u05b0\u05d9\u05b8\u05d4<\/strong><\/p>\n

Israel\u2019s high cost of living (<\/strong>\u05d9\u05b9\u05d5\u05e7\u05b6\u05e8 \u05d4\u05b7\u05de\u05bc\u05b4\u05d7\u05b0\u05d9\u05b8\u05d4<\/strong>)<\/strong> has been a major concern in recent decades. It sparked several large scale protests (<\/strong>\u05de\u05b0\u05d7\u05b8\u05d0\u05d5\u05b9\u05ea<\/strong>)<\/strong> over the years, drove Israelis to leave the country and try their luck abroad, and became a top issue during every government election. Unfortunately, it doesn\u2019t seem be getting better any time soon.<\/p>\n

The cost of living in Israel is high.<\/p>\n

Wave of Price Hike = <\/strong>\u05d2\u05bc\u05b7\u05dc \u05d4\u05b4\u05ea\u05b0\u05d9\u05b7\u05e7\u05bc\u05b0\u05e8\u05d5\u05bc\u05d9\u05d5\u05ba\u05ea<\/strong> \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

In early December, the Israel Electric Corporation\u00a0announced a rate hike of 6%, starting in January 2019. The Corporation explained the raise is due to a global increase of fuel, natural gas and coal prices (<\/strong>\u05de\u05b0\u05d7\u05b4\u05d9\u05e8<\/strong>\u05c5\u05d9\u05dd<\/strong>).<\/strong> Soon after, the Israel Water Authority, the largest electricity consumer (<\/strong>\u05e6\u05b7\u05e8\u05b0\u05db\u05b8\u05df<\/strong>)<\/strong> by itself, updated its rates for 2019 as well, and announced an increase of 4.5%.<\/p>\n

The upcoming electricity and water price hikes in 2019, compelled other companies to adjust their prices as well. Osem, one of the largest food manufacturers and distributors in\u00a0Israel, proclaimed price increases (<\/strong>\u05e2\u05b2\u05dc\u05c5\u05d9\u05d9\u05bc\u05b7\u05ea \u05de\u05b0\u05d7\u05b4\u05d9\u05e8<\/strong>\u05c5\u05d9\u05dd<\/strong>)<\/strong> for one-third of its products (<\/strong>\u05de\u05d5\u05bc\u05e6\u05b8\u05e8\u05c5\u05d9\u05dd<\/strong>).<\/strong> That includes ketchup, flour, soups and salty snacks (with the exception of Bamba<\/a>).<\/p>\n

The increase in rice prices was significant – up to 30% for certain species.<\/p>\n

Osem\u2019s price raise follows other food and household goods producers and distributors who already declared price hikes (<\/strong>\u05d4\u05b4\u05ea\u05b0\u05d9\u05b7\u05e7\u05bc\u05b0\u05e8\u05d5\u05bc\u05ea<\/strong>)<\/strong> on previous months.
