The statutory day off from school and work enables citizens to exercise their <strong>right to vote (<\/strong><strong>\u05d6\u05b0\u05db\u05d5\u05bc\u05ea \u05d4\u05b7\u05e6\u05b0\u05d1\u05bc\u05b8\u05e2\u05b8\u05d4)<\/strong>, providing them the time to go to the polls.<\/p>\n<p>The elections are carried out manually. Citizens are required to go to the <strong>polling station (<\/strong><strong>\u05e2\u05b6\u05de\u05b0\u05d3\u05bc\u05b7\u05ea \u05e7\u05b7\u05dc\u05b0\u05e4\u05bc\u05b4\u05d9)<\/strong>, and to identify themselves to the polling station committee with an identification card (ID, driving license, or passport). Then they will be given a blue <strong>envelope (<\/strong><strong>\u05de\u05b7\u05e2\u05b2\u05d8\u05b8\u05e4\u05b8\u05d4)<\/strong> to take with them into the voting booth.<\/p>\n<p>Behind the <strong>divider (<\/strong><strong>\u05e4\u05bc\u05b7\u05e8\u05b0\u05d2\u05bc\u05d5\u05b9\u05d3)<\/strong> there\u2019s a box with piles of white notes. The number of piles represents the number of the parties running for the election. The parties appointed their leaders beforehand, so the vote is not for a particular candidate for <strong>prime minister (<\/strong><strong>\u05e8\u05b9\u05d0\u05e9\u05c1 \u05de\u05b6\u05de\u05b0\u05e9\u05c1\u05b8\u05dc\u05b8\u05d4)<\/strong>, but for a <strong>party (<\/strong><strong>\u05de\u05b4\u05e4\u05b0\u05dc\u05b8\u05d2\u05b8\u05d4)<\/strong>. On each <strong>ballot note (<\/strong><strong>\u05e4\u05bc\u05b6\u05ea\u05b6\u05e7 \u05d4\u05b7\u05e6\u05b0\u05d1\u05bc\u05b8\u05e2\u05b8\u05d4)<\/strong> appears the name of the party. It\u2019s made to ensure no one influences the citizen\u2019s vote. Escorts are not allowed behind the blue divider. The voter chooses the note of the party he wishes to vote for and puts it in the envelope leaving the booth. Many, therefore, enjoy the rest of the day with family and friends. The sabbatical day permits an employee to be absent from work and to still be entitled to payment. An employee who does work on the sabbatical day will be entitled to his or her salary at a rate of 200%. Entertainment businesses enjoy more customers on election day, and therefore are willing to pay the higher wages to their workers.<\/p>\n<p>The sabbatical day allows the voters to participate in the celebration of democracy, in attempt to increase the voter <strong>turnout (<\/strong><strong>\u05d0\u05b8\u05d7\u05d5\u05bc\u05d6 \u05d4\u05b7\u05e6\u05b0\u05d1\u05bc\u05b8\u05e2\u05b8\u05d4)<\/strong>. Over the last decades voter turnout has been steadily declining in many established democracies, including Israel. Voter turnout in the first general elections held in 1949 was the highest turnout ever: about 87%. The turnout in the 2015 general elections was lower: 72.3%.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>voting age (<\/strong><strong>\u05d2\u05bc\u05c5\u05d9\u05dc \u05d4\u05b7\u05e6\u05b0\u05d1\u05bc\u05b8\u05e2\u05b8\u05d4)<\/strong> in Israel is 18, and there\u2019re more than 6.3 million Israelis eligible to vote in the coming election.<\/p>\n<p>The results of the election will start coming in pretty quickly. <strong>Exit polls (<\/strong><strong>\u05de\u05b4\u05d3\u05b0\u05d2\u05bc\u05b8\u05dd)<\/strong> are published right after the polls close.
