They were laid over the years by the armies of Israel, Syria, Jordan and Egypt mostly along the borders of Israel, but also near military camps and training areas. The IDF maintained some of them to protect the country from <strong>raids (<\/strong><strong>\u05e4<\/strong><strong>\u05bc\u05b0\u05e9\u05c1\u05b4\u05d9\u05d8\u05b8\u05d4<\/strong><strong>)<\/strong>, but many of them are no longer needed. They are very dangerous, given that landmines remain operational many years after being buried. Some of them even get carried out of the <strong>fenced off (<\/strong><strong>\u05de\u05b0\u05d2\u05bb\u05d3\u05bc\u05b8\u05e8<\/strong><strong>)<\/strong> minefield by the rain and snow melt.<\/p>\n<p>One such landmine changed the life of Daniel Yuval. On the first Saturday of February 2010, the weather was nice and many Israelis travelled all the way to the north to enjoy the fresh snow covering the Golan Heights. The Yuval family and other visitors played in the snow on the foot of Avital Mountain overlooking the nearby warning signs. Daniel, only 11 years old, was intrigued by the sparkling ice crystals on a rock. He ran to the rock, when suddenly an explosion went off. Daniel\u2019s legs were injured and he lost his right foot.<\/p>\n<p>The Israeli news of that day reported on the incident:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"\u05d4\u05d9\u05dc\u05d3 \u05d3\u05e0\u05d9\u05d0\u05dc \u05d9\u05d5\u05d1\u05dc \u05e0\u05e4\u05e6\u05e2 \u05de\u05de\u05d5\u05e7\u05e9 \u05d1\u05d2\u05d5\u05dc\u05df-\u05db\u05ea\u05d1\u05ea\u05d5 \u05e9\u05dc \u05e8\u05d5\u05d1\u05d9 \u05d4\u05de\u05e8\u05e9\u05dc\u05d2\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/_GJaq3kWYdM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Although injured, Daniel didn\u2019t waste time. Soon after the injury, he joined activist organizations advocating the worldwide <strong>clearance (<\/strong><strong>\u05e4\u05bc\u05b4\u05e0\u05bc\u05d5\u05bc\u05d9)<\/strong> of landmines to prevent innocent <strong>casualties (<\/strong><strong>\u05e0\u05b4\u05e4\u05b0\u05d2\u05bc\u05b8\u05e2\u05c5\u05d9\u05dd)<\/strong>. In November that year, he spoke at the UN in Geneva. A couple of months later, he sat next to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin\u00a0Netanyahu in a governmental committee meeting. Daniel\u2019s efforts bore fruits and a year after his injury, the law to establish a national <strong>authority (<\/strong><strong>\u05e8\u05b8\u05e9\u05c1\u05d5\u05bc\u05ea)<\/strong> for clearing mines that are not required for <strong>security (<\/strong><strong>\u05d4\u05b2\u05d2\u05b8\u05e0\u05b8\u05d4)<\/strong> purposes was approved <strong>unanimously (<\/strong><strong>\u05e4\u05bc\u05b6\u05d4 \u05d0\u05b6\u05d7\u05b8\u05d3)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The following year, the new <a href=\"http:\/\/www.inmaa.org.il\/he\/Pages\/default.aspx\">Israeli Mine Action Authority<\/a> began its work. It demined hundreds of landmines in the Arava Valley, West Bank, and Golan Heights. Unfortunately, it\u2019s only <strong>a drop in the ocean (<\/strong><strong>\u05d8\u05b4\u05d9\u05e4\u05bc\u05b8\u05d4 \u05d1\u05bc\u05b7\u05d9\u05bc\u05b8\u05dd)<\/strong>. In the south of Israel, for example, mines laid by the IDF decades ago to prevent <strong>infiltration (<\/strong><strong>\u05d7\u05b2\u05d3\u05b4\u05d9\u05e8\u05b8\u05d4<\/strong><strong>)<\/strong> are still endangering hikers. And it\u2019s getting worse over the years due to winter floods that expand the areas suspected as <strong>mined (<\/strong><strong>\u05de\u05b0\u05de\u05bb\u05e7\u05bc\u05b8\u05e9\u05c1)<\/strong>.
