Upon Landing<\/h3>\n

Here I am on the tarmac of \u05e0\u05b0\u05de\u05b7\u05dc \u05d4\u05b7\u05ea\u05b0\u05bc\u05e2\u05d5\u05bc\u05e4\u05b8\u05d4 \u05d1\u05b5\u05bc\u05df \u05d2\u05bc\u05d5\u05bc\u05e8\u05b0\u05d9\u05d5\u05b9\u05df\u200e<\/span> (neh-mahl ha-teh-‘oo-fah Ben Gurion<\/strong> – Ben Gurion International Airport<\/em>), taxiing to the \u05de\u05b8\u05e1\u05d5\u05b9\u05e3<\/span> (mah-sof<\/strong> – terminal<\/em>). Not a bad \u05d8\u05b4\u05d9\u05e1\u05b8\u05d4<\/span> (tee-sah<\/strong> – flight<\/em>). Had a bit of \u05de\u05b0\u05d4\u05d5\u05bc\u05de\u05b8\u05d4<\/span> (me-hoo-mah<\/strong> – turbulance<\/em>) over\u00a0 \u05d4\u05b7\u05d9\u05bc\u05b8\u05dd \u05d4\u05b7\u05ea\u05bc\u05b4\u05d9\u05db\u05d5\u05b9\u05df<\/span> (ha-yahm ha-tee-khon<\/strong> – the Mediterranean Sea<\/em>). This \u05e0\u05b0\u05de\u05b7\u05dc \u05ea\u05bc\u05b0\u05e2\u05d5\u05bc\u05e4\u05b8\u05d4<\/span> (neh-mahl ha-teh-‘oo-fah<\/strong> – airport<\/em>) is very secure with a security force that includes Israel Police officers, \u05e6\u05b0\u05d1\u05b8\u05d0 \u05d4\u05b7\u05d4\u05b2\u05d2\u05b8\u05e0\u05b8\u05d4 \u05dc\u05b0\u05d9\u05b4\u05e9\u05b0\u05c2\u05e8\u05b8\u05d0\u05b5\u05dc<\/span> (ts-vah ha-hah-gah-nah leh-yees-rah-‘el<\/strong> – Israel Defense Force<\/em>) and \u05de\u05b4\u05e9\u05b0\u05c1\u05de\u05b7\u05e8 \u05d4\u05b7\u05d2\u05b0\u05bc\u05d1\u05d5\u05bc\u05dc\u200e\u200e<\/span> (meesh-mahr ha-g’vool<\/strong> – Israel Border Police<\/em>). Airport security guards operate both in uniform and undercover to maintain a high level of vigilance and detect any possible threats. Now it’s time to deplane.<\/p>\n

When I got off the plane, I walked through the jetway, to the lobby on the first floor. Here’s where you may get confused, so bear with me – click on the images of the maps above to get an idea of getting through the airport. I need to get up to the lobby on the second floor. So, walking through the \u05e9\u05c1\u05b0\u05dc\u05d5\u05bc\u05d7\u05b8\u05d4<\/span> (shloo-khah<\/strong> – concourse<\/em>), to the \u05db\u05bc\u05b4\u05d9\u05db\u05bc\u05b8\u05e8<\/span> (kee-kahr<\/strong> – rotunda<\/em>). I went round the rotunda to the \u05e9\u05c2\u05b0\u05d3\u05b5\u05e8\u05b8\u05d4<\/span> (s’deh-rah<\/strong> – connector<\/em>), and from there, since I am an \u05e0\u05d5\u05b9\u05e1\u05b5\u05e2\u05b7 \u05d1\u05bc\u05b5\u05d9\u05e0\u05b0\u05dc\u05b0\u05d0\u05bb\u05de\u05bc\u05b4\u05d9<\/span> ( – International passenger), I go to \u05d1\u05bc\u05b4\u05e7\u05bc\u05b9\u05e8\u05b6\u05ea \u05d2\u05bc\u05b0\u05d1\u05d5\u05bc\u05dc\u05d5\u05b9\u05ea<\/span> (bee-koh-reht ge-voo-loat<\/strong> – border control) on floor G.<\/p>\n

What you’ll see next are manned control counters, and biometric control counters. Israeli \u05d3\u05bc\u05b7\u05e8\u05b0\u05db\u05bc\u05d5\u05b9\u05df<\/span> (dar-kohn<\/strong> – passport<\/em>) holders will approach the manned counters or make use of the biometric system. I’m not sure what it’s about, but again, I’m a foreign \u05d3\u05bc\u05b7\u05e8\u05b0\u05db\u05bc\u05d5\u05b9\u05df<\/span>\u00a0(dar-kohn<\/strong> – passport<\/em>) holder, so I go to the manned counter where I hand over my \u05d3\u05bc\u05b7\u05e8\u05b0\u05db\u05bc\u05d5\u05b9\u05df<\/span>\u00a0(dar-kohn<\/strong> – passport<\/em>) and form L17 (Arriving tourists are required<\/span>, prior to landing, to fill out form L17 for the registration of personal details. Trust me, this will prevent delays when going through \u05e0\u05d4\u05dc\u05d9 \u05e4\u05e1\u05e4\u05d5\u05e8\u05d8<\/span> (bee-ko-ret ha-dar-ko-neem<\/strong> – passport procedures). Make sure to write down all your \u05d3\u05bc\u05b7\u05e8\u05b0\u05db\u05bc\u05d5\u05b9\u05df<\/span> (dar-kohn<\/strong> – passport) and flight details and keep a copy for yourself, as it will be needed when leaving Israel<\/em>).<\/p>\n

Once you get through \u05d1\u05bc\u05b4\u05e7\u05bc\u05b9\u05e8\u05b6\u05ea \u05d2\u05bc\u05b0\u05d1\u05d5\u05bc\u05dc\u05d5\u05b9\u05ea<\/span> (bee-koh-reht ge-voo-loat<\/strong> – border control<\/em>) and \u05e0\u05d4\u05dc\u05d9 \u05e4\u05e1\u05e4\u05d5\u05e8\u05d8<\/span> (bee-ko-ret ha-dar-ko-neem<\/strong> – passport procedures<\/em>), Level G also has \u05d0\u05b4\u05e1\u05bc\u05d5\u05bc\u05e3 \u05db\u05b0\u05bc\u05d1\u05d5\u05bc\u05d3\u05b8\u05d4<\/span> (ee-soof keh-voo-dah<\/strong> – baggage claim<\/em>) and \u05d4\u05b7\u05de\u05b6\u05db\u05b6\u05e1<\/span> (ha-meh-khes<\/strong> – customs inspection<\/em>). Watch the signs that indicate where your \u05db\u05b0\u05bc\u05d1\u05d5\u05bc\u05d3\u05b8\u05d4<\/span> (keh-voo-dah<\/strong> – luggage<\/em>) is due to arrive. Once you collect your \u05db\u05b0\u05bc\u05d1\u05d5\u05bc\u05d3\u05b8\u05d4<\/span> (keh-voo-dah<\/strong> – luggage<\/em>), you go on to the \u05d4\u05b7\u05de\u05b6\u05db\u05b6\u05e1<\/span> (ha-meh-khes<\/strong> – customs inspection<\/em>). Oh, once you have your bags, make sure you do not leave your \u05db\u05b0\u05bc\u05d1\u05d5\u05bc\u05d3\u05b8\u05d4<\/span> (keh-voo-dah<\/strong> – luggage<\/em>) unattended at any time<\/span>.<\/p>\n

At \u05d4\u05b7\u05de\u05b6\u05db\u05b6\u05e1<\/span> (ha-meh-khes<\/strong> – customs inspection<\/em>) there are three paths to choose from to go through:<\/p>\n

Green Path<\/strong><\/span>: \u05e2\u05dc \u05de\u05d4 \u05dc\u05d4\u05b4\u05e6\u05b0\u05d4\u05b4\u05d9\u05e8<\/span> (lee mah l\u2019heets-heer<\/strong> – nothing to declare<\/em>).
\nRed Path<\/strong><\/span>: Passengers bringing with them any electrical appliance worth more than $200.
\nBlue Path<\/strong><\/span>: Groups and air crew who have \u05e2\u05dc \u05de\u05d4 \u05dc\u05d4\u05b4\u05e6\u05b0\u05d4\u05b4\u05d9\u05e8<\/span> (lee mah l\u2019heets-heer<\/strong> – nothing to declare<\/em>).<\/p>\n

When it comes to bringing \u05db\u05bc\u05b6\u05e1\u05b6\u05e3<\/span> (keh-sehf<\/strong> – money<\/em>) into or taking \u05db\u05bc\u05b6\u05e1\u05b6\u05e3<\/span> (keh-sehf<\/strong> – money<\/em>) out of Israel, you must \u05dc\u05d4\u05b4\u05e6\u05b0\u05d4\u05b4\u05d9\u05e8<\/span> (l\u2019-hahts-heer<\/strong> – to declare<\/em>) any amount over NIS 80,000 \u05e9\u05b6\u05c1\u05e7\u05b6\u05dc \u05d7\u05b8\u05d3\u05b8\u05e9\u05c1\u200e\u200e<\/span> (sheh-kehl khah-dahsh<\/strong><\/em> – Israeli new Shekel)<\/em>. I’m not carrying that much, but I do need to exchange some dollars to \u05e9\u05b6\u05c1\u05e7\u05b6\u05dc \u05d7\u05b8\u05d3\u05b8\u05e9\u05c1\u200e\u200e<\/span> (sheh-kehl khah-dahsh<\/strong> – Israeli new Shekel<\/em>) (as of August 23rd, 2012 the exchange rate was $1 = NIS 4.01107<\/em>). Good thing is there’s a couple of counters by Bank Hapoalim<\/a> and Changeplace<\/a> close by. Tip:<\/strong> It is recommended to keep any foreign currency receipts, you will need them to repurchase \u05de\u05b7\u05d8\u05b0\u05d1\u05bc\u05b5\u05e2\u05b7 \u05d6\u05b8\u05e8<\/span> (maht-beh-‘a zahr<\/strong> – foreign currency) upon departure.<\/em><\/p>\n

After that is a Hall where you can meet your family and friends who have been waiting for your \u05d4\u05b7\u05d2\u05bc\u05b8\u05e2\u05b8\u05d4<\/span> (ha-gah-‘ah<\/strong> – arrival<\/em>). I’m not meeting anyone there, so I’ll just take a breather and admire the view outside the windows for a few minutes. Oh wait, there’s a coffee shop. I’ll go in there and have a cup of coffee. There are other shops and services around – florists, souvenir shops, a post office, foreign currency exchange, counters to return cel phones and banks. I’ll probably go and rent a car so I can drive when and where I want while in \u05ea\u05b5\u05bc\u05dc\u05be\u05d0\u05b8\u05d1\u05b4\u05d9\u05d1<\/span> (tel ah-veev<\/strong> – Tel Aviv<\/em>).<\/p>\n

Okay, had my coffee, got a car<\/a> and now I’m off to the \u05de\u05b8\u05dc\u05d5\u05b9\u05df<\/span> (mah-loan<\/strong> – hotel<\/em>) in \u05e8\u05b8\u05de\u05b7\u05ea \u05d2\u05b7\u05bc\u05df\u200e\u200e<\/span> (rah-maht gahn<\/strong><\/em>).<\/p>\n

Next, I’ll give you some lessons on \u05e0\u05b0\u05d4\u05b4\u05d9\u05d2\u05b8\u05d4<\/span> (neh-hee-gah<\/strong> – driving<\/em>) in Israel. It’s a 20-30 minute drive to the \u05de\u05b8\u05dc\u05d5\u05b9\u05df<\/span> (mah-loan<\/strong> – hotel<\/em>) from the \u05e0\u05b0\u05de\u05b7\u05dc \u05ea\u05bc\u05b0\u05e2\u05d5\u05bc\u05e4\u05b8\u05d4<\/span> (neh-mahl ha-teh-‘oo-fah<\/strong> – airport<\/em>), so it’s not a long drive. but I’ll give you some tips and vocabulary on \u05e0\u05b0\u05d4\u05b4\u05d9\u05d2\u05b8\u05d4<\/span> (neh-hee-gah<\/strong> – driving<\/em>), okay?<\/p>\n
