In this post and the next, we’ll take a brief look at blessings used in Judaism. In this part we’ll look at the general blessing. In part two, we’ll look at the blessings when reading Torah. And as before, hover your cursor over the Hebrew word or sentence to look at the pronunciation.<\/em><\/p>\n

What do the words “knees” and “pool” have in common? They remind us of the nature and purpose of a blessing in Judaism. When you want to show honor to someone important – a king, a queen, a president, you bend your knee to show this honor. When you jump into a pool, the cool (or cold!<\/em>) water surrounds you and shocks you and wakes you up.<\/p>\n

When you look around at the different blessings and things of creation surrounding us, is shocks us and wakes us up to the creations of God. You show God honor by reciting a \u05d1\u05b0\u05e8\u05b8\u05db\u05b8\u05d4\u200e<\/span>.<\/p>\n

A \u05d1\u05b0\u05e8\u05b8\u05db\u05b8\u05d4\u200e<\/span> is not just a little thing to show appreciation for something. A \u05d1\u05b0\u05e8\u05b8\u05db\u05b8\u05d4\u200e<\/span> is for showing appreciation and joy for what it is the Divine One has given and provided.<\/p>\n

The Basic Blessing<\/h2>\n

To start a \u05d1\u05b0\u05e8\u05b8\u05db\u05b8\u05d4\u200e<\/span>, you must begin with a formula that has three parts:<\/p>\n

1. \u05d1\u05b8\u05bc\u05e8\u05d5\u05bc\u05da\u05b0\u200e<\/span> – This indicates you’re about to offer praise and blessings<\/p>\n

2. \u05d0\u05ea\u05b8\u05bc\u05d4 \u05d9\u05b8\u05d9\u200e<\/span> – ” you God” – this shows that you are directing the praise and blessings to God.<\/p>\n

3. \u05d0\u05b3\u05dc\u05d5\u05b9\u05d4\u05b5\u05d9\u05e0\u05d5\u05bc \u05de\u05b6\u05dc\u05b6\u05da\u05b0 \u05d4\u05b8\u05e2\u05d5\u05b9\u05dc\u05b8\u05dd …\u200e<\/span> – Ruler of the Cosmos – You are acknowledging God as a universal God of all peoples.<\/p>\n

All together, it is \u05d1\u05b8\u05bc\u05e8\u05d5\u05bc\u05da\u05b0\u200e \u05d0\u05ea\u05b8\u05bc\u05d4 \u05d9\u05b8\u05d9\u200e \u05d0\u05b3\u05dc\u05d5\u05b9\u05d4\u05b5\u05d9\u05e0\u05d5\u05bc \u05de\u05b6\u05dc\u05b6\u05da\u05b0 \u05d4\u05b8\u05e2\u05d5\u05b9\u05dc\u05b8\u05dd …\u200e<\/span><\/p>\n

After this introduction, you would add the blessing that is specific to the occasion. Let’s take a look at some:<\/p>\n

Before eating bread<\/h3>\n

\u05d1\u05b8\u05bc\u05e8\u05d5\u05bc\u05da\u05b0\u200e \u05d0\u05ea\u05b8\u05bc\u05d4 \u05d9\u05b8\u05d9\u200e \u05d0\u05b3\u05dc\u05d5\u05b9\u05d4\u05b5\u05d9\u05e0\u05d5\u05bc \u05de\u05b6\u05dc\u05b6\u05da\u05b0 \u05d4\u05b8\u05e2\u05d5\u05b9\u05dc\u05b8\u05dd\u200e<\/span> \u05d4\u05b7\u05de\u05bc\u05e6\u05b4\u05d9\u05d0 \u05dc\u05b6\u05d7\u05b6\u05dd \u05de\u05b4\u05df \u05d4\u05b8\u05d0\u05b8\u05e8\u05b6\u05e5.<\/span>
\n(Blessed are You our God, King of the Universe, who brings forth bread from the earth).<\/p>\n

Witnessing the wonder of nature<\/h3>\n

This blessing is said upon witnessing something wonderful about creation – a bolt of lightning, a high mountain, even the stars at night.
\n\u05d1\u05b8\u05bc\u05e8\u05d5\u05bc\u05da\u05b0\u200e \u05d0\u05ea\u05b8\u05bc\u05d4 \u05d9\u05b8\u05d9\u200e \u05d0\u05b3\u05dc\u05d5\u05b9\u05d4\u05b5\u05d9\u05e0\u05d5\u05bc \u05de\u05b6\u05dc\u05b6\u05da\u05b0 \u05d4\u05b8\u05e2\u05d5\u05b9\u05dc\u05b8\u05dd\u200e<\/span> \u05e2\u05d5\u05b9\u05e9\u05b6\u05c2\u05d4 \u05de\u05b7\u05e2\u05b2\u05e9\u05b5\u05c2\u05d4 \u05d1\u05b0\u05e8\u05b5\u05d0\u05e9\u05b4\u05c1\u05d9\u05ea.<\/span>

Before drinking wine<\/h3>\n

\u05d1\u05b8\u05bc\u05e8\u05d5\u05bc\u05da\u05b0\u200e \u05d0\u05ea\u05b8\u05bc\u05d4 \u05d9\u05b8\u05d9\u200e \u05d0\u05b3\u05dc\u05d5\u05b9\u05d4\u05b5\u05d9\u05e0\u05d5\u05bc \u05de\u05b6\u05dc\u05b6\u05da\u05b0 \u05d4\u05b8\u05e2\u05d5\u05b9\u05dc\u05b8\u05dd\u200e<\/span> \u05d1\u05bc\u05d5\u05b9\u05e8\u05b5\u05d0 \u05e4\u05b0\u05bc\u05e8\u05b4\u05d9 \u05d4\u05b7\u05d2\u05b8\u05bc\u05e4\u05b6\u05df.<\/span>

For special occasions<\/h3>\n

This blessing is used for occasions like birthdays, wedding anniversaries or even the first sweet fruits of the season:
