Do you have a hobby? Do you like to collect stuff? I do. I like to collect coins, I love photography and of course, I love learning languages. So let’s start talking about what we like to do – our hobbies.<\/p>\n

The Hebrew word for ‘hobby’ is \u05ea\u05b7\u05bc\u05d7\u05b0\u05d1\u05b4\u05bc\u05d9\u05d1<\/span>. To tell someone what your hobby is, you would say:<\/p>\n

My hobby is… – \u05d4\u05ea\u05b7\u05bc\u05d7\u05b0\u05d1\u05b4\u05bc\u05d9\u05d1 \u05e9\u05b6\u05c1\u05dc\u05b4\u05d9 …<\/span><\/p>\n

You can also shorten it to \u05d4\u05ea\u05b7\u05bc\u05d7\u05b0\u05d1\u05b4\u05bc\u05d9\u05d1\u05d9 …<\/span> and still mean the same thing.<\/p>\n

So, what do you like to do? Here’s a few things that are popular:<\/p>\n

writing – \u05db\u05b0\u05bc\u05ea\u05b4\u05d9\u05d1\u05b8\u05d4<\/span>
\nsculpting – \u05e4\u05b4\u05bc\u05e1\u05bc\u05d5\u05bc\u05dc<\/span>
\ncooking – \u05d1\u05b4\u05bc\u05e9\u05bc\u05c1\u05d5\u05bc\u05dc<\/span>
\ngardening – \u05d2\u05b4\u05bc\u05e0\u05bc\u05d5\u05bc\u05df<\/span>
\ncollecting – \u05d0\u05b4\u05e1\u05bc\u05d5\u05bc\u05e3<\/span>
\npainting – \u05e6\u05b4\u05d9\u05bc\u05d5\u05bc\u05e8<\/span>
\nhandicrafts – \u05de\u05b0\u05dc\u05b8\u05d0\u05db\u05b8\u05d4<\/span><\/p>\n

If you are more of a collector or simply interested in a certain amusement, you would say:<\/p>\n

\nI’m interested in… – \u05d0\u05b2\u05e0\u05d9 \u05de\u05b0\u05e2\u05bb\u05e0\u05b0\u05d9\u05b8\u05df \u05d1…<\/span><\/p>\n

Women would say<\/strong>:
\nI collect… – \u05d0\u05b2\u05e0\u05d9 \u05d0\u05d5\u05b9\u05e1\u05b6\u05e4\u05b6\u05ea…<\/span>
\nI’m interested in… – \u05d0\u05b2\u05e0\u05d9 \u05de\u05b0\u05e2\u05bb\u05e0\u05b0\u05d9\u05b6\u05e0\u05b6\u05e0\u05ea \u05d1…<\/span><\/p>\n

And then say what it is you’re interested in:<\/p>\n

antiques – \u05e2\u05b7\u05ea\u05b4\u05bc\u05d9\u05e7\u05d5\u05b9\u05ea<\/span>
\ndolls – \u05d1\u05d5\u05d1\u05d5\u05ea<\/span>
\nstamps – \u05d1\u05bc\u05d5\u05bc\u05dc\u05b4\u05d9\u05dd<\/span>
\ncoins – \u05de\u05b7\u05d8\u05b0\u05d1\u05b5\u05bc\u05e2\u05b7\u05d5\u05b9\u05ea<\/span>
\nbooks – \u05e1\u05b5\u05e4\u05b6\u05e8\u05b4\u05d9\u05dd<\/span><\/p<\/p>\n

Showing possession in Hebrew<\/h3>\n

Possession in Hebrew can be shown in different ways. The first one we’ll look at is by using the preposition \u05e9\u05b6\u05c1\u05dc\u05b4<\/span> ‘of’:<\/p>\n

John’s hobby – \u05d4\u05b7\u05ea\u05b7\u05bc\u05d7\u05b0\u05d1\u05b4\u05bc\u05d9\u05d1 \u05e9\u05b6\u05c1\u05dc \u05d9\u05d5\u05b9\u05d7\u05b8\u05e0\u05b8\u05df<\/span>
\nDavid’s book – \u05d4\u05b7\u05e1\u05b6\u05e4\u05b6\u05e8 \u05e9\u05b6\u05c1\u05dc \u05d3\u05b8\u05bc\u05d5\u05b4\u05d3<\/span><\/p>\n

Basically you’re saying “The hobby of John” and “The book of David”. Pretty simple construction there, don’t you think? And remember, Hebrew always attaches \u05d4\u05b7\/\u05d4\u05b8<\/span> (meaning ‘the’) to the noun being possessed.<\/p>\n

The other way to show possession is by using the word \u05e9\u05b6\u05c1\u05dc<\/span> with the endings indicating who is doing the possessing.<\/p>\n

my – \u05e9\u05c1\u05dc\u05d9<\/span>
\nyour (masc)* – \u05e9\u05c1\u05dc\u05da<\/span>
\nyour (fem)* – \u05e9\u05c1\u05dc\u05da<\/span>
\nhis – \u05e9\u05c1\u05dc\u05d5\u05b9<\/span>
\nher – \u05e9\u05c1\u05dc\u05d4<\/span>
\nour – \u05e9\u05c1\u05dc\u05e0\u05d5\u05bc<\/span>
\nyour (masc) – \u05e9\u05c1\u05dc\u05db\u05dd<\/span>
\nyour (fem) – \u05e9\u05c1\u05dc\u05db\u05df<\/span>
\ntheir (masc) – \u05e9\u05c1\u05dc\u05d4\u05dd<\/span>
\ntheir (fem) – \u05e9\u05c1\u05dc\u05d4\u05df<\/span><\/p>\n

Examples:
\nMy sister – \u05d0\u05d7\u05d5\u05ea \u05e9\u05c1\u05dc\u05d9<\/span>
\nHis book – \u05e1\u05e4\u05e8 \u05e9\u05c1\u05dc\u05d5\u05b9<\/span>
\nTheir car – \u05de\u05db\u05d5\u05b9\u05e0\u05d9\u05ea \u05e9\u05c1\u05dc\u05d4\u05df<\/span><\/p>\n

Notice:<\/strong> \u05e9\u05dc<\/span> is placed after<\/em> the noun in Hebrew.<\/p>\n

*These two forms look the same in Hebrew without the niqqud. The context of the sentence will show you how to pronounce them.<\/p>\n
