Kavi Pradeep mulled over the Indo Sino war as he walked along the beach in Mahim, Mumbai. The poet, and songwriter, was deeply disturbed at the losses.\u00a0 It was 1962 and China overwhelmingly defeated India during this intense conflict at 18,000 feet high in the mountainous region of Tibet. Many soldiers lost their lives during the Ind0 Chinese War 1962<\/a>. They were unprepared for the bitter cold. They did not have the snow goggles, warm clothing or manpower to beat their neighbors to the north.<\/p>\n

Pradeep thought about the soldiers and words began to form in his mind. He wanted to write a tribute to the many soldiers that died in the war. As the story goes, he did not even have a piece of paper or pen to write the words that came to his mind. He borrowed a pen from a nearby walker and wrote the first verse on the foil of a cigarette pack. Little did he realize that this song would become an instant hit. It would also become one of the most patriotic songs sung in India.<\/p>\n

Kavi Pradeep finished writing the song and got the composer Ramchandran to put music to it. He wanted Lata Mangeshkar, India’s nightingale, to sing it at a fundraiser organized by the producer Mehboob Khan.<\/p>\n

So, in 1963 on a cold February evening in Delhi, Lata Mangeshkar<\/a> sang this song live in front of the then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru at the Republic Day<\/a> function, leaving him teary-eyed.<\/p>\n
