Asha Bhosle – another luminary paid a tribute<\/a> to her sister \u092c\u0939\u0928 and long time rival \u092a\u094d\u0930\u0924\u093f\u0926\u094d\u0935\u0902\u0926\u094d\u0935\u0940 in the music industry. She reminisced on their closeness \u0928\u093f\u0915\u091f\u0924\u093e through childhood, the school years and parallel \u0938\u092e\u093e\u0928\u093e\u0902\u0924\u0930 lives.<\/p>\n

Asha is the younger sister of Lata Mangeshkar. She comes from a musical family from Sangli, Maharasthra. Her first language is Marathi but like her sister, sang in Hindi for Bollywood films as well as in many other languages.<\/p>\n

Asha started singing at the age of 10 but commenced \u0936\u0941\u0930\u0942 \u0915\u093f\u092f\u093e her career in 1943 in Bollywood and continues singing today. Chala Chala Nav Bala is the first song Asha sang in Marathi language.<\/p>\n

She sang ‘mandir \u092e\u0902\u0926\u093f\u0930 songs’ which mean ‘temple or holy songs’ and ‘hotel songs’ referring to fast and catchy numbers.<\/p>\n

Bollywood and Beyond<\/h2>\n

Asha sang in over 1000 movies in Bollywood and recorded many albums in other languages collaborated with R.E.M<\/a>. in a song as well. She also collaborated \u0938\u0939\u092f\u094b\u0917 \u0915\u093f\u092f\u093e with Boy George<\/a> in an upbeat non-filmy song.<\/p>\n

Asha got married at the age of 16 but the marriage did not last. She did marry a\u00a0 famous Indian composer, RD Burman. This marriage lasted for 14 years till he died. She has three children by her first marriage.<\/p>\n

The Brit Pop band Cornershop paid a tribute \u0936\u094d\u0930\u0926\u094d\u0927\u093e\u0902\u091c\u0932\u093f to Asha in their song ‘Brimful of Asha’. This was a chart-topper in the UK.<\/p>\n

She sang the song ‘Chura Liya Hai Tumne<\/a>‘ – a Spanish guitar composition, with Mohammed Rafi in the movie ‘Yaadon Ki Baaraat’ – playback to movie star Zeenat Aman’s role in the film.<\/p>\n

Another hit that brings the audience to their feet is Dum Maro Dum<\/a> an iconic song during the 70’s. Bollywood recently remixed and revived<\/a> this song, recently in a new remake \u092a\u0941\u0928\u0930\u094d\u0928\u093f\u0930\u094d\u092e\u093e\u0923 featuring Deepika Padukone.<\/p>\n

Sibling Rivalry<\/h2>\n

People talk about the rivalry \u0935\u093f\u0930\u094b\u0927 between Asha and her big sister Lata. They dismiss \u0916\u093e\u0930\u093f\u091c it as tales but there was a certain amount of healthy rivalry between these two stars. They grew up so close that Lata would take Asha to school with her, not wanting to leave her kid sister alone \u0905\u0915\u0947\u0932\u093e.<\/p>\n

However, the sisters grew distant \u0926\u0942\u0930\u0938\u094d\u0925 due to\u00a0 Lata’s objection \u0906\u092a\u0924\u094d\u0924\u093f to Asha’s first marriage \u0936\u093e\u0926\u0940. There was tension\u0924\u0928\u093e\u0935 between the siblings \u0938\u0939\u094b\u0926\u0930 as the new husband did not allow his wife to visit her sister.<\/p>\n

The sisters differ in temperament, with Asha being the more outgoing and popular of the two. However, it must be said, Lata grew up quickly at the tender age of 14. She started earning \u0915\u092e\u093e\u0908 in order to take care of her family. A task that made her a provider \u092a\u094d\u0930\u0926\u093e\u0924\u093e and protector. Her intentions \u092a\u094d\u0930\u0926\u093e\u0924\u093e were out of love.<\/p>\n

Legacy<\/h2>\n

Asha made it into the Guinness Book of World Records with an amazing 12000 recorded songs. The government of India honored her with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2010 and the Padma Vibushan award in 2008.<\/p>\n
