\"SeaBandra, Mumbai is a bustling suburb on the west coast \u092a\u0936\u094d\u091a\u093f\u092e\u0940 \u0924\u091f of Mumbai city. Waves \u0932\u0939\u0930 from the Arabian Sea pound Bandra’s shores day \u0926\u093f\u0928 in and day out, bringing landlocked \u0918\u093f\u0930\u093e residents to her beaches \u0938\u093e\u0917\u0930\u0924\u091f and waterfront \u0924\u091f promenades. I grew up in the sleepy suburb \u0909\u092a\u0928\u0917\u0930 in the seventies and eighties. One cannot call it sleepy anymore. It is very much awake \u091c\u093e\u0917 and partying till the wee hours \u0918\u0902\u091f\u093e of the morning.<\/p>\n

Bandra made it to Time Out Magazines \u092a\u0924\u094d\u0930\u093f\u0915\u093e list of the 40 coolest neighborhoods<\/a> in the world in 2020, along with Allston, Boston. The cool factors that gave Bandra that distinction, are its neighborhood vibe<\/a>, culture, trendy cafes \u0915\u0948\u092b\u093c\u0947, bistros, and restaurants.<\/p>\n

However, it is these cool factors that make it one of the most expensive \u092e\u0939\u0902\u0917\u093e towns to live in, in India.<\/p>\n

What does Bandra look like?<\/h2>\n

Bandra has narrow \u0938\u0902\u0915\u0940\u0930\u094d\u0923 tree-lined streets with old 17th-century bungalows nestled among sleek \u091a\u093f\u0915\u0928\u093e highrises. When I lived there, we had mostly bungalows and no highrises. Mine was one of the first just behind the famous \u092a\u094d\u0930\u0938\u093f\u0926\u094d\u0927 Carter Road. It was built by a well-known construction \u0928\u093f\u0930\u094d\u092e\u093e\u0923 king – Mr. Raheja who started the invasion of the highrises in my neighborhood.<\/p>\n

The bungalows are designed with terracotta tiled roofs, quaint brightly painted balconies and porticos, bougainvillea-filled garden \u092c\u0917\u0940\u091a\u093e walls, and gorgeous mahogany \u092e\u0939\u094b\u0917\u0928\u0940 \u0935\u0943\u0915\u094d\u0937 furniture, a leftover from the Portuguese and British.<\/p>\n

Because it is situated on the coast, it has the unmistakable aroma of the fishing villages that seem to be ever-present. The Kolis still go out every day for their catch of fish \u092e\u091b\u0932\u0940 and one can see the lines of Bombay Duck, a type of fish really, drying on lines in the sun.<\/p>\n

I remember seeing mangroves lining the seashore from my window, and a small farm with a farmer and his cow plowing the field. I am sure the highrises won this battle for prime waterfront space. I have not been there in years.<\/p>\n

Bandra is home to the Koli fishing community and East Indians. They are the original residents. Today, many ex-pats, Bollywood stars, and rich industrialists live in its dwellings. But still, it is quite nostalgic to walk down the narrow streets and see the homes we hung out around.<\/p>\n

The local government designated \u0928\u093e\u092e\u093f\u0924 many of the old bungalows as a part of India’s heritage homes.<\/p>\n

Shopping<\/h2>\n

The appeal of a town is due to its attractive shopping sites<\/a>. While many wealthy fashion designers or multinational fashion houses chose to showcase their designs in heritage homes converted into ateliers \u0915\u093e\u0930\u0916\u093e\u0928\u093e, there is Linking Road where the slightly lighter wallets can get amazing deals on clothes and shoes.<\/p>\n

Churches<\/h2>\n

Another distinctive feature is the many gorgeous churches. The Spanish Jesuits came over and built large cathedral \u092c\u0921\u093c\u093e \u0917\u093f\u0930\u091c\u093e structures in the typical Spanish style with high domed ceilings, thick walls, and ornate decorative work. These churches<\/a> are still there. Some even have graveyards and it is quite prestigious to be able to say one has a plot for one’s ultimate destination.<\/p>\n
