The caste system consists of the <strong>\u092c\u094d\u0930\u093e\u0939\u094d\u092e\u0923<\/strong> class. The <strong>\u092c\u094d\u0930\u093e\u0939\u094d\u092e\u0923<\/strong> class is the class of priests, scholars and teachers. There&#8217;s also the <span><strong>\u0915\u094d\u0937\u0924\u094d\u0930\u093f\u092f<\/strong> class, composed of soldiers, kings and nobles. The trading class is the <strong>\u0935\u0948\u0936\u094d\u092f<\/strong> class. Then there&#8217;s the <strong>\u0936\u0942\u0926\u094d\u0930<\/strong>, who are artisans, farmers and laborers. Lastly there&#8217;s the <strong>\u0926\u0932\u093f\u0924<\/strong> class. The <strong>\u0926\u0932\u093f\u0924<\/strong> class is also known as the &#8220;untouchables&#8221;.\u00a0There are laws prohibiting discrimination against this caste, but prejudices against this caste still exist. You&#8217;ve probably noticed that the classes tend to be divided by occupation and <span><strong>\u0935\u0930\u094d\u0923<\/strong>\u00a0(also known as social order).<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span>Theorectically speaking, the <strong>\u092c\u094d\u0930\u093e\u0939\u094d\u092e\u0923 <\/strong>class is considered the highest class in terms of ranking. This is because the people of this class have devoted their life to learning and teaching the <span><strong>\u0935\u0947\u0926<\/strong>, which are sacred Hindu writings. Within the <strong>\u092c\u094d\u0930\u093e\u0939\u094d\u092e\u0923<\/strong> community itself, there is a ranking system that\u00a0is determined\u00a0by region and <strong>\u0917\u094b\u0924\u094d\u0930 <\/strong>(clan or lineage). These subcastes may be divided even further by the <span class=\"Deva\"><strong>\u0936\u093e\u0916\u093e<\/strong> or the vedic schools to which a member of the <strong>\u092c\u094d\u0930\u093e\u0939\u094d\u092e\u0923 <\/strong>class may be affiliated with. Members of this class stay alive through the charity of others. This is because certain restrictions like killing animals and prohibitions on selling\/trading goods\u00a0decrease the prospects for any other work not related to teaching the <strong>\u0935\u0947\u0926<\/strong>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span class=\"Deva\">The next in rank\u00a0is the <span><strong>\u0915\u094d\u0937\u0924\u094d\u0930\u093f\u092f <\/strong>class. Nowadays there is less of a functional role for those of the <span><strong>\u0915\u094d\u0937\u0924\u094d\u0930\u093f\u092f <\/strong>class, but<\/span>\u00a0families that are descended from the <span><strong>\u0915\u094d\u0937\u0924\u094d\u0930\u093f\u092f <\/strong>class are still proud of their ancestor&#8217;s lineage. In the past the <span><strong>\u0915\u094d\u0937\u0924\u094d\u0930\u093f\u092f <\/strong>class was well respected because they protected the people from danger.\u00a0Indian legends and epics, which are still told today,\u00a0describe a glorious\u00a0past in which\u00a0warriors were\u00a0viewed as heroes rather than murderers. The <span><strong>\u0915\u094d\u0937\u0924\u094d\u0930\u093f\u092f <\/strong>class holds itself to a code of war, or a set of\u00a0ethics toward enemies and women.\u00a0Some families treat this code of war very seriously and live by it to honor their family.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span class=\"Deva\"><span><span><span><span>The next in rank is the\u00a0merchant class or the <strong>\u0935\u0948\u0936\u094d\u092f<\/strong> caste. The <strong>\u0935\u0948\u0936\u094d\u092f<\/strong> caste is primarily responsible for growing grain, herding cows, and trading goods. This caste is believed to contain the first capitalists of India. Sometimes there is some overlap between the <strong>\u0935\u0948\u0936\u094d\u092f<\/strong> caste and the\u00a0<strong>\u0936\u0942\u0926\u094d\u0930<\/strong> caste. The main distinction is that the <strong>\u0936\u0942\u0926\u094d\u0930<\/strong> caste is considered lower in rank than the <strong>\u0935\u0948\u0936\u094d\u092f<\/strong> caste. At the lower end of the <strong>\u0936\u0942\u0926\u094d\u0930<\/strong> spectrum is the <strong>\u0926\u0932\u093f\u0924<\/strong> class. People like street cleaners, corpse handlers, and\u00a0washermen belong to this group.
