{"id":141,"date":"2010-02-17T13:54:35","date_gmt":"2010-02-17T18:54:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/hindi\/?p=141"},"modified":"2010-02-17T13:54:35","modified_gmt":"2010-02-17T18:54:35","slug":"the-imperative","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/hindi\/the-imperative\/","title":{"rendered":"The Imperative"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In English, the polite imperative is formed by saying, &#8220;Please do this &#8230;&#8221;, &#8220;Please sit down&#8221; etc. In Hindi the polite imperative is formed by adding the suffix <strong>\u0907\u090f<\/strong>\u00a0to the verb.<\/p>\n<p>Here are a couple of examples:<\/p>\n<p>Please go : <strong>\u091c\u093e\u0907\u090f<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Please eat : <strong>\u0916\u093e\u0907\u090f<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Please come : <strong>\u0906\u0907\u090f<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>With the phrases above, you&#8217;ve probably noticed that <span class=\"ehe in\"><strong>\u0915\u0943\u092a\u092f\u093e<\/strong><\/span> (which means please in Hindi) wasn&#8217;t necessary to form the polite imperative. Just the suffix <strong>\u0907\u090f <\/strong>is needed to form the polite imperative.<\/p>\n<p>To form the\u00a0intimate imperative (<strong>\u0924\u0942<\/strong>), just take the stem of the verb.<\/p>\n<p>Come! : <strong>\u0906<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Go! : <strong>\u091c\u093e<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Eat! : <strong>\u0916\u093e<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>To form the familiar imperative (<strong>\u0924\u0941\u092e<\/strong>), add the suffix <strong>\u0913<\/strong> to the stem of the verb.<\/p>\n<p>Come!\u00a0: <strong>\u0906\u0913<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Go! : <strong>\u091c\u093e\u0913<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Eat! : <strong>\u0916\u093e\u0913<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There are some exceptions to this rule. Verbs that end in vowel <strong>\u0908\u00a0<\/strong>will end in suffix <strong>\u091c\u093f\u090f<\/strong> instead of <strong>\u0908\u090f<\/strong> in the polite imperative.<\/p>\n<p>Please drink : <strong>\u092a\u0940\u091c\u093f\u090f<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Please do (work) : (<strong>\u0915\u093e\u092e<\/strong>) <strong>\u0915\u0940\u091c\u093f\u090f <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Please take (tea) or Please have some tea : (<strong>\u091a\u093e\u092f<\/strong>) <strong>\u0932\u0940\u091c\u093f\u090f<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I put the words &#8220;work&#8221; and &#8220;tea&#8221; in parentheses in both the English and Hindi, to show that any noun can be substituted.<\/p>\n<p>\ufffd<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In English, the polite imperative is formed by saying, &#8220;Please do this &#8230;&#8221;, &#8220;Please sit down&#8221; etc. In Hindi the polite imperative is formed by adding the suffix \u0907\u090f\u00a0to the verb.
