Etymology (\u0936\u092c\u094d\u0926 – \u0935\u093f\u091a\u093e\u0930)<\/strong> is study of words’ history, their origins as well as modification in their forms and meanings.<\/p>\n

Today, I will focus on the classification of Hindi words based on their construction, origin and meaning.<\/p>\n

\n

A. \u092c\u0928\u093e\u0935\u091f \u0915\u0947 \u0906\u0927\u093e\u0930 \u092a\u0930 (Based on Construction)<\/strong><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n

1. \u0930\u0941\u0922\u093c \u0936\u092c\u094d\u0926 (Elementary Words)<\/strong>
\nThose words which can not be divided and they will not make any sense, if divided.<\/p>\n

Examples: \u0906\u0917 (Fire), \u0906\u092e (Mango), \u0939\u093e\u0925 (Hand)<\/p>\n

2. \u092f\u094c\u0917\u093f\u0915 \u0936\u092c\u094d\u0926 (Compound Words)<\/strong>
\nThose words which are made of one or more than one words<\/p>\n

Examples: \u0930\u093e\u091c\u0915\u0941\u092e\u093e\u0930 (Prince) = \u0930\u093e\u091c\u093e (King) + \u0915\u0941\u092e\u093e\u0930 (Young man\/Bachelor)<\/p>\n

3. \u092f\u094b\u0917\u0930\u0941\u0922\u093c \u0936\u092c\u094d\u0926 (Combined Words)<\/strong>
\nThose words which are made of two or more words but their meaning deviate from their literal meaning and their meanings represent a person or thing from a common culture.<\/p>\n

Example: \u0917\u093f\u0930\u093f\u0927\u0930 (Lord Krishna) = \u0917\u093f\u0930\u093f (Mountain) + \u0927\u0930 (Carrier)<\/p>\n

B. \u0909\u0924\u094d\u092a\u0924\u094d\u0924\u093f \u0915\u0947 \u0906\u0927\u093e\u0930 \u092a\u0930 (Based on Origin)<\/strong><\/h3>\n

1. \u0924\u0924\u094d\u0938\u092e \u0936\u092c\u094d\u0926 (Derived Words)<\/strong>
\nThese are the words which are derived from Sanskrit language.<\/p>\n

Examples: \u0906\u0917\u094d\u0928\u093f (Fire), \u0939\u0938\u094d\u0924 (Hand), \u0906\u092e\u094d\u0930 (Mango)<\/p>\n

2. \u0924\u0926\u092d\u0935 \u0936\u092c\u094d\u0926 (Modified Words)<\/strong>
\nThese are the words which were originally from Sanskrit language but after going through Prakrit (\u092a\u094d\u0930\u093e\u0915\u0943\u0924) , Apbhransh (\u0905\u092a\u092d\u094d\u0930\u0902\u0936) and finally to Hindi have been modified. (Note : Hindi came from Apbhransh which came from Prakrit. Prakrit came from Sanskrit.<\/p>\n

Examples: \u0906\u0917 (Fire), \u0939\u093e\u0925 (Hand), \u0906\u092e (Mango)<\/p>\n

3. \u0926\u0947\u0936\u091c \u0936\u092c\u094d\u0926 (Indigenous Words)<\/strong>
\nThese are the words which come into language through vernacular use.<\/p>\n

Examples: \u0932\u0921\u093c\u0915\u0940 (Girl), \u091a\u093f\u0921\u093c\u093f\u092f\u093e (Sparrow), \u091c\u0942\u0924\u093e (Shoe)<\/p>\n

4. \u0935\u093f\u0926\u0947\u0936\u0940 \u0936\u092c\u094d\u0926 (Foreign Words)<\/strong>
\nThose words which have foreign origins and used in Hindi as loan words.<\/p>\n

Examples: \u091a\u093e\u092c\u0940 (Keys), \u0915\u093f\u0938\u094d\u092e\u0924 (Destiny), \u0906\u0930\u093e\u092e (Rest), \u0905\u0928\u093e\u0928\u093e\u0938 (Pineapple)<\/p>\n

C. \u0905\u0930\u094d\u0925 \u0915\u0947 \u0906\u0927\u093e\u0930 \u092a\u0930 (Based on Meaning)<\/strong><\/h3>\n

1. \u0938\u093e\u0930\u094d\u0925\u0915 \u0936\u092c\u094d\u0926 ((Meaningful Words)<\/strong>
\nThose words which have some meaning.<\/p>\n

Examples: \u0930\u094b\u091f\u0940 (Bread), \u092d\u0935\u0928 (Building), \u092a\u0941\u0938\u094d\u0924\u0915 (Book)<\/p>\n

2. \u0928\u093f\u0930\u0930\u094d\u0925\u0915 \u0936\u092c\u094d\u0926 (Meaningless Words)<\/strong>
\nThose words which are meaningless.<\/p>\n

Examples: \u0916\u093e\u0928\u093e – \u0935\u093e\u0928\u093e, \u0938\u094b\u0928\u093e – \u0935\u094b\u0928\u093e, \u092c\u094b\u0932\u0928\u093e – \u091a\u093e\u0932\u0928\u093e
