Raama (<span style=\"font-family: Tahoma;\"><strong>\u0930\u093e\u092e<\/strong> <\/span>) is a legendary king of Ayodhyaa (<span style=\"font-family: Tahoma;\"><strong>\u0905\u092f\u094b\u0927\u094d\u092f\u093e <\/strong><\/span>) who fights Raavana (<span style=\"font-family: Tahoma;\"><strong>\u0930\u093e\u0935\u0923<\/strong> <\/span>) the king of Lankaa (<span style=\"font-family: Tahoma;\"><strong>\u0932\u0902\u0915\u093e<\/strong><\/span>). According to the legend Raavana (<span style=\"font-family: Tahoma;\"><strong>\u0930\u093e\u0935\u0923<\/strong> <\/span>) holds Raama&#8217;s (<span style=\"font-family: Tahoma;\"><strong>\u0930\u093e\u092e<\/strong> <\/span>) wife Siitaa (<span style=\"font-family: Tahoma;\"><strong>\u0938\u0940\u0924\u093e<\/strong><\/span>) captive and Raama (<span style=\"font-family: Tahoma;\"><strong>\u0930\u093e\u092e<\/strong> <\/span>) tries to rescue his wife by battling his enemy Raavana (<span style=\"font-family: Tahoma;\"><strong>\u0930\u093e\u0935\u0923<\/strong> <\/span>).<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in;\">Gudhi Padwa (<span style=\"font-family: Tahoma;\"><strong>\u0917\u0941\u0922\u0940\u092a\u093e\u0921\u0935\u093e<\/strong> <\/span>) is a huge holiday in the Maharashtra region. Maharashtra is an Indian state west of India. Late March or early April on the solar calendar is the beginning of the year on the Indian lunar calendar. Gudhi Padwa (<span style=\"font-family: Tahoma;\"><strong>\u0917\u0941\u0922\u0940\u092a\u093e\u0921\u0935\u093e<\/strong> <\/span>) also marks the beginning of the rabi (<span style=\"font-family: Tahoma;\"><strong>\u0930\u092c\u0940<\/strong><\/span>) season. Rabi (<span style=\"font-family: Tahoma;\"><strong>\u0930\u092c\u0940<\/strong><\/span>) is a time when the crops are harvested and it marks the beginning of the spring season.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in;\">To prepare for Gudhi Padwa (<span style=\"font-family: Tahoma;\"><strong>\u0917\u0941\u0922\u0940\u092a\u093e\u0921\u0935\u093e<\/strong> <\/span>) people sweep the floors in addition to a full spring cleaning of the house. In some villages fresh cow dung is plastered on the mud hut cracks and roofs are thatched. You&#8217;ll also see gold brocaded yellow, green and other colored scarves called zari (<span style=\"font-family: Tahoma;\"><strong>\u095b\u0930\u0940<\/strong> <\/span>). The zari (<span style=\"font-family: Tahoma;\"><strong>\u095b\u0930\u0940<\/strong> <\/span>) is tied to a stick with a pot placed over the zari (<span style=\"font-family: Tahoma;\"><strong>\u095b\u0930\u0940<\/strong> <\/span>). Small flowers and twigs are sometimes tied to the stick as well.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in;\">The whole getup with the zari (<span style=\"font-family: Tahoma;\"><strong>\u095b\u0930\u0940<\/strong> <\/span>) and the pot is called gudhi (<span style=\"font-family: Tahoma;\"><strong>\u0917\u0941\u0922\u0940<\/strong><\/span>). The gudhi (<span style=\"font-family: Tahoma;\"><strong>\u0917\u0941\u0922\u0940<\/strong><\/span><strong>)<\/strong> is like a home made flag celebrating Raama&#8217;s (<span style=\"font-family: Tahoma;\"><strong>\u0930\u093e\u092e<\/strong> <\/span>) victory over Raavana (<span style=\"font-family: Tahoma;\"><strong>\u0930\u093e\u0935\u0923<\/strong> <\/span>). The gudhi (<span style=\"font-family: Tahoma;\"><strong>\u0917\u0941\u0922\u0940<\/strong><\/span>) is placed on the right side of the entrance of the home.
