In Hindi, a proverb is called <strong>\u0915\u0939\u093e\u0935\u0924<\/strong> (<em>Kahaavat<\/em>). As the proverbs usually came out of understanding, way of thinking and experience of people, they can reflects the experience and cultural roots of a language&#8217;s speakers.<\/p>\n<p>In this post, with you, I would like to ponder over some of the popular proverbs in Hindi. The aim of this post is not only to understand the meaning of proverbs but also the cultural or linguistic significance of the proverb. I will try my best to give you the metaphorical meanings in these proverbs.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1. \u091b\u094b\u091f\u093e \u092e\u0941\u0901\u0939 \u0914\u0930 \u092c\u0921\u093c\u0940 \u092c\u093e\u0924 (Chota maunh aur badi baat) \u2013 to talk big without having a big position.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In many culture, the physical build up could signify the person position and wealth in a society. Here, &#8220;<strong>\u091b\u094b\u091f\u093e \u092e\u0941\u0901\u0939<\/strong>&#8221; (<em>Chota Mauh<\/em> &#8211; Small face) may signify the malnutrition of a person which could be related to his lower position and hence, his wealth.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2. \u091c\u093f\u0924\u0928\u0947 \u092e\u0941\u0901\u0939 \u0909\u0924\u0928\u0940 \u092c\u093e\u0924\u0947\u0902 (Jitne maunh utni batein) \u2013 More mouths will have more talks.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Here, &#8220;<strong>\u091c\u093f\u0924\u0928\u0947 \u092e\u0941\u0901\u0939<\/strong>&#8221; (<em>Jitne Mauh<\/em> &#8211; That many mouth) shows that as you increase the number of people (and their mouths), the rumours or gossips will also increase.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3. \u092c\u0939\u0924\u0940 \u0917\u0902\u0917\u093e \u092e\u0947\u0902 \u0939\u093e\u0925 \u0927\u094b\u0928\u093e (Behti ganga mein hath dhona) \u2013 to use the available opportunity.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The river &#8220;<strong>\u0917\u0902\u0917\u093e<\/strong>&#8220;( <em>Ganga<\/em> &#8211; Ganges) is well known river in India which is sacred to Hindus. It is common believe in Hinduism that people can wash of their sins by taking a bath in the river. So comes the proverbs, which says that the if there is a happening, people irrespective of its wrong or right consequences, will not hesitate to join.<\/p>\n<p><strong>4. \u092e\u093e\u0928 \u0928\u093e \u092e\u093e\u0928 \u092e\u0948\u0902 \u0924\u0947\u0930\u093e \u092e\u0947\u0939\u092e\u093e\u0928 (maan na maan main tera mehman) \u2013 Getting involved without having anything to do with something \/ someone.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you don&#8217;t know someone, you or other should not consider themselves welcomed as <strong>\u092e\u0947\u0939\u092e\u093e\u0928<\/strong> (<em>Mehmaan<\/em> &#8211; Guest) to someone or some issue.<\/p>\n<p><strong>5. \u0926\u0942\u0930 \u0915\u0947 \u0922\u094b\u0932 \u0938\u0941\u0939\u093e\u0935\u0928\u0947 (Door ke dhol suhavane) \u2013 The grass is always greener on the other side.<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you can hear faraway <strong>\u0922\u094b\u0932<\/strong> (<em>Dhol<\/em> &#8211; Drum), it doesn&#8217;t necessarily means that it is all musical there too.<\/p>\n<p><strong>6. \u0905\u0902\u0927\u093e \u0915\u094d\u092f\u093e \u091a\u093e\u0939\u0947 \u0926\u094b \u0906\u0901\u0916\u0947\u0902 (Aandha kya chahe do aankhein) \u2013 A wish coming true.<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Just like a <strong>\u0905\u0902\u0927\u093e<\/strong> (<em>Andha<\/em> &#8211; Blind) only wants to see the world (wants eyes), a person only needs his\/her wish fulfilled.<\/p>\n<p><strong>7. \u0918\u0930 \u0915\u093e \u092d\u0947\u0926\u0940 \u0932\u0902\u0915\u093e \u0922\u093e\u090f (Ghar ka bhedi lanka dhaye) \u2013 Division is main reason for the damage (family, partnership etc).<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The proverbs depict an incident from Indian myth, \u0930\u093e\u092e\u093e\u092f\u0923 (<em>Ramayana<\/em>) when a brother of \u0930\u093e\u0935\u0923 (<em>Ravana<\/em>) became the traitor and told Rama on how to defeat his own brother.<\/p>\n<p><strong>8. \u0915\u0939\u093e \u0930\u093e\u091c\u093e \u092d\u094b\u091c \u0915\u0939\u093e \u0917\u0902\u0917\u0942 \u0924\u0947\u0932\u0940 (Kaha raja bhoj aur kaha gangu teli) \u2013 Big difference in status or class.<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>One is <strong>\u0930\u093e\u091c\u093e \u092d\u094b\u091c<\/strong> (King <em>Bhoj<\/em>) and another is a <strong>\u0917\u0902\u0917\u0942 \u0924\u0947\u0932\u0940<\/strong> (Oil merchant named <em>Gangu<\/em>). There is huge class difference between the two.<\/p>\n<p><strong>9. \u091c\u0948\u0938\u0940 \u0915\u0930\u0928\u0940 \u0935\u0948\u0938\u0940 \u092d\u0930\u0928\u0940 (Jesi karni wesi bharni) \u2013 As you sow so shall you reap.<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This one is very straight forward as <strong>\u0915\u0930\u0928\u0940<\/strong> (<em>Karni<\/em> &#8211; Doing) and <strong>\u092d\u0930\u0928\u0940<\/strong> (<em>Bharni<\/em> &#8211; Bearing of consequences). You will bear the consequence of your own doing.<\/p>\n<p><strong>10. <strong>\u091a\u094b\u0930\u0940 \u0915\u093e \u092e\u0949\u0932 \u092e\u094b\u0930\u0940 \u092e\u0947\u0902<\/strong> (Chori ka maal mori mein) \u2013 Money earned the wrong way will be taken away, will be lost.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The things which has been stolen (<strong>\u091a\u094b\u0930\u0940 \u0915\u093e \u092e\u0949\u0932<\/strong>) or in earned in a wrong way will eventually find its way into a sluice (<strong>\u092e\u094b\u0930\u0940 \u092e\u0947\u0902<\/strong>), will be lost.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Proverbs, in any language, are the interesting ways to describe the commonly accepted facts which have been understood with experience.
