Some of our readers have requested the topic of the grammatical gender of non-living things and I would like to explain the same in this post.<\/p>\n

Hindi poses a challenge to the learners when it comes to the grammatical gender of non-living things as unlike English, Hindi has grammatical gender for them as well. Moreover, there are no articles before nouns which can provide you a hint unlike in some languages i.e. der, die and das in German language. The identification of grammatical gender of noun for non-living things must be learned by heart as they are needed for the noun declension.<\/p>\n

Like I covered in the post on identification of grammatical gender, I would like to revise some of the rules which will help you to identify if the thing has feminine or masculine gender. Those nouns which usually end in \u0908 (i) in Hindi\u00a0are feminine nouns \u00a0like \u0915\u0941\u0930\u094d\u0938\u0940 (Kursi – Chair), \u0932\u0915\u0921\u093c\u0940 (Lakadi – Wood), \u0930\u094b\u091f\u0940 (Roti – Bread), \u0916\u093f\u0921\u093c\u0915\u0940 (Khidki – Window) etc. Masculine nouns have a similar pattern, for example those end with \u0906 (aa) like \u092c\u0938\u094d\u0924\u093e (Basta – Bag), \u0915\u092a\u0921\u093c\u093e (Kapada – Cloth), \u091a\u0936\u094d\u092e\u093e (Chashma – Glasses) etc.<\/p>\n
