Though they may seem difficult at first, but they are very simple. The most important point to remember about them is that these verbs denote an action which is not directly performed by the subject but indirectly through some agent. Some of the common causative verbs in Hindi are करवाना, चलवाना, पकवाना, लिखवाना, पिटवाना, पढ़वाना, मिलवाना, सिखवाना, खिलवाना etc. For clues, if you see “वाना” at the end of the verbs, you can be sure that it is causative verb.

In sentence, you can notice that the ending “वाना” changes to “वाया” for masculine object and “वाई” for feminine object. Lets have a look on how to use causative verbs in Hindi with some examples.

करवाना – Karvaana – to cause to do
अध्यापक ने मुझ से बहुत काम करवाया ।
Adhyaapak ne mujh se bahut kaam karvaaya.
Teacher had me work hard.

चलवाना – Chalvaana – to cause to walk
सुरेश ने फिल्म के बहाने मुझ से बहुत चलवाया ।
Suresh ne film ke bahaane mujh se bahut chalvaaya.
On excuse of going for film, Shyam had me walk a lot.

पकवाना – Pakvaana – to cause to cook
मैंने कल बहिन से खाना बनवाया ।
Maine kal behan se khaana banvaaya.
I had my sister cook yesterday.

लिखवाना – Likhvaana – to cause to write
अध्यापक ने सुरेश से बहुत लिखवाया ।
Adyaapak ne shayam se bahut likhvaaya.
Teacher had Shyam to write a lot.

पिटवाना – Pitvaana – to cause to beat
राहुल ने राकेश को अपने दोस्तों से पिटवाया ।
Rahul ne Rakesh ko aapne dosto se pitvaaya.
Rahul had his friend to beat Rakesh.

पढ़वाना – Padvaana – to cause to read
पिताजी ने सारे साल मुझ से बहुत पढ़वाया ।
Pitaji ne mujh ko saare saal bahut padvaaya.
Father had me study hard for the whole year.

मिलवाना – Milvaana – to cause to meet
कमल ने मुझ को उसके मित्रों से मिलवाया ।
Kamal ne mujh ko uske mitron se milvaaya.
Kamal had his friends met me.

सिखवाना – Sikhvana – to cause to learn
मैंने अपनी बहन को अध्यापक से फ्रेंच सिखवाई ।
Meine aapni bahan ko adhyaapak se french sikhvaayi.
I had a teacher taught my sister French.

खिलवाना – Khilvaana – to cause to eat
राजा ने सारे देश द्रोहियों को मगरमच्छ से खिलवाया ।
Raja ne sare desh drohiyon ko magarmacch se khilvaaya.
King had the crocodile ate all traitors.

Causative verbs are used very often in Hindi.
