In India, this festival is known as Sankranti or Pongal (in Tamil Nadu). It is usually celebrated to mark the arrival of spring (\u0935\u0938\u0902\u0924 &#8211; Vasant) in India as well as marks the celestial event of transition of the Sun (\u0938\u0942\u0930\u094d\u092f &#8211; Surya) into the zodiac sign of Capricorn (\u092e\u0915\u0930 \u0930\u093e\u0936\u093f &#8211; Makara Rashi). It also symbolize the end of the winter solace which makes the day (\u0926\u093f\u0928 &#8211; Din) last longer than night (\u0930\u093e\u0924 &#8211; Raat). This festival also signifies the importance of time system and astronomy (\u0916\u0917\u094b\u0932 \u0935\u093f\u091c\u094d\u091e\u093e\u0928 &#8211; Khagol Vigyan) to ancient Indians who were a keen observer of celestial events.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">This festival (\u0924\u094d\u092f\u094c\u0939\u093e\u0930 &#8211; Tyohaar) not only has an astronomical significance but also for farmers (\u0915\u093f\u0938\u093e\u0928 &#8211; Kisaan) as commemorates the beginning of the harvest season and cessation of the northeast monsoon in South India. Apart from farmers, the festival marks the beginning of an auspicious phase in Indian culture according to the Hindu calendar.
