In honor of Father’s Day, I’ve dedicated a post to a few founding fathers of India. All these founding fathers have one thing in common; they have all contributed to Indian society in one way or another.

Probably the most famous founding father of India is Mahatma Gandhi. While he was a father to the people of India, he had a difficult relationship with his own sons. Was Gandhi a bad father? It’s difficult to say, because the letters between Gandhi with his eldest son Harilal show a strained relationship, but it seems that he got along fairly well with his three other sons. It’s a tragic story because Gandhi’s work to better the lives of other people may have worsened the relationship with his eldest son.

Dr. Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar is a founding father of India, because he authored the Indian Constitution. The Indian Constitution guaranteed the rights and freedoms of all Indians, including the Untouchables. Ambedkar himself was born into the Untouchable caste, but thanks to his father, Ramiji Sakpal, he was able to receive an education despite his caste. With his father’s encouragement, Ambedkar became the first Untouchable student to attend university in his neighborhood.

Jawaharlal Nehru (जवाहरलाल नेहरू) was the first Prime Minister of India. He was an important figure in the Indian independence movement and an advocate for educational and social reform. While it has been speculated that Nehru may have had an affair with a married woman named Edwin Mountbatten, his relationship with his daughter Indira was solid. Jawaharlal and Indira’s letters show that the two had a deep bond over politics and a special father-daughter relationship worthy to be envied of.

On the twentieth of June, some Indians will be celebrating Father’s Day in India.
