When I was growing up in India, the fall season was always my favorite time of the year.<\/p>\n

Once the monsoons had tapered off, typically marked by\u00a0Ganesh\u00a0<\/a>visarjan<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>(\u0917\u0923\u0947\u0936 \u0935\u093f\u0938\u0930\u094d\u091c\u0928\/immersion of Ganesh idols), it was time to look forward to cooler and shorter days.<\/p>\n

However, the barely imperceptible shift to decreasing temperatures was not as much the highlight as was the chain of festivals that would mark this time of the year. Beginning with Navratri and rolling into Dashahara (also Dussehra or Vijayadashami) and Deepavali<\/a>, a nearly month long festival season ensured a steady stream of holidays, gifts, visits to friends and family, new clothes, and the permission to eat a limitless supply of\u00a0mithaai\u00a0<\/em>(\u092e\u093f\u0920\u093e\u0908<\/em> \/<\/em>sweets)<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0namkeen<\/em>\u00a0(\u0928\u092e\u0915\u0940\u0928<\/em> \/<\/em>savory snacks)<\/em>. I never held back from the opportunity for\u00a0pet puja<\/em>\u00a0(\u092a\u0947\u091f \u092a\u0942\u091c\u093e \/ an idiomatic phrase that literally means “stomach worship.” In figurative speech it means “to take good care of one’s stomach by eating a variety of delicacies to keep the stomach happy.”<\/p>\n

There are\u00a0mithaai<\/em>\u00a0and snacks unique to different parts of the country, however, there are some that can be commonly found and relished anywhere.\u00a0Gujiya, kaju katli, laddoo,\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0chakli\u00a0<\/em>are ubiquitous festival fare across India.<\/p>\nLet’s read\u00a0this conversation between a mother and child as they get ready to visit relatives on the occasion of Deepavali.<\/span>\n
