Over the past 4 months, \u00a0we have read of different situations in daily Indian life, heard conversations around them, and learned related words and vocabulary. We learned to introduce ourselves \u0905\u092a\u0928\u093e \u092a\u0930\u093f\u091a\u092f \u0926\u0947\u0928\u093e (apna parichay dena)<\/i><\/a>\u00a0as well ask for directions<\/a>, go to the doctor<\/a>, or appreciate different tastes and flavors of food<\/a>.<\/div>\n

Today we will address a very basic aspect of Hindi language grammar–gender. Like many other languages (Spanish, French, German, etc.) Hindi uses a grammatical gender \u0932\u093f\u0902\u0917\u00a0(ling)<\/i>\u00a0to classify objects.\u00a0<\/i>They are feminine gender \u0938\u094d\u0924\u094d\u0930\u0940\u0932\u093f\u0902\u0917 (stree-ling) <\/i>and masculine gender \u092a\u0941\u0932\u094d\u0932\u093f\u0902\u0917 (pulling)<\/i>. In addition to living creatures, non-living things are also assigned a gender. For example, in Spanish, la ventana = <\/i>window (feminine gender). Similarly, in Hindi, window\u00a0\u0916\u093f\u095c\u0915\u0940 takes the feminine gender.<\/div>\n

Very loosely, if a noun is feminine, then a long e<\/i>\u00a0can be appended to the end of the conjugated verb or adjective to correspond with gender of the noun. The masculine gender is grammatically denoted by appending the long\u00a0a\u00a0<\/i>to the end of the conjugated verb or adjective.<\/div>\n

(Here we use \u0916\u0941\u0932\u0940<\/b> \u0939\u0948 (fem.) since window is feminine.)<\/div>\n
However, box \u0921\u093f\u092c\u094d\u092c\u093e (dibba) <\/i>is masculine. Hence, we would say:<\/div>\n
\u0921\u093f\u092c\u094d\u092c\u093e \u0916\u0941\u0932\u093e<\/b> \u0939\u0948\u0964 = The box is open. (Dibba khula hai.)<\/i><\/div>\n
(Here we use \u0916\u0941\u0932\u093e<\/b>\u00a0\u0939\u0948 (masc.) since box is masculine.)<\/div>\n
