Last week \u092a\u093f\u091b\u0932\u0947 \u0939\u092b\u094d\u0924\u0947 (pichhlay haftay)<\/i>, we looked at construction of the simple present tense \u0938\u093e\u092e\u093e\u0928\u094d\u092f \u0935\u0930\u094d\u0924\u094d\u0924\u092e\u093e\u0928 \u0915\u093e\u0932\u00a0(saamaanya vartamaan kaal)\u00a0<\/em>for regular verbs \u0915\u094d\u0930\u093f\u092f\u093e (kriya)<\/em>.<\/p>\n

However, instead of moving to the simple past tense, I thought it would be useful to learn the present continuous\/progressive \u0924\u093e\u0924\u094d\u0915\u093e\u0932\u093f\u0915 \u0935\u0930\u094d\u0924\u094d\u0924\u092e\u093e\u0928 \u0915\u093e\u0932\u00a0\u00a0(taatkalik vartamaan)<\/em>\u00a0tense. As its name denotes, the\u00a0\u0924\u093e\u0924\u094d\u0915\u093e\u0932\u093f\u0915 \u0935\u0930\u094d\u0924\u094d\u0924\u092e\u093e\u0928 \u0915\u093e\u0932 indicates that an action is still in progress.<\/p>\n

Let us look at some examples \u0909\u0926\u093e\u0939\u0930\u0923 (udaharan)<\/em>:<\/div>\n

\u0909\u0926\u093e\u0939\u0930\u0923 \u0967 :<\/strong> If there is a sudden downpour just as you are stepping out for a quick errand, you rarely say:<\/div>\n
“It rains!” \u00a0\u092c\u093e\u0930\u093f\u0936 \u0939\u094b\u0924\u0940<\/span> \u0939\u0948\u0964 (Baarish hoti hai.)<\/em>
\nA more appropriate response would be, “It is raining!”\u00a0\u092c\u093e\u0930\u093f\u0936 \u0939\u094b \u0930\u0939\u0940<\/span> \u0939\u0948\u0964 \u00a0(Baarish ho rahi hai.)<\/em><\/div>\n

Let’s say a husband calls out to his wife for some help.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\u00a0If she says, “Main aati hoon.<\/em>“\/ “\u092e\u0948\u0902 \u0906\u0924\u0940<\/span> \u0939\u0942\u0901\u0964 ”\u00a0it means more like “I’ll be right there.”<\/div>\n
This indicates that she intends to go and help him, but she still hasn’t set out to do so.<\/div>\n

However, if she says, “Main aa rahi hoon.”<\/em>\/ “\u092e\u0948\u0902 \u0906 \u0930\u0939\u0940<\/span> \u0939\u0942\u0901\u0964”<\/div>\n
it means, “I’m coming.” or “I’m on my way.”<\/div>\n
This indicates that she is on her way to help him.<\/div>\n
