Kurta-pyjama \u0915\u0941\u0930\u094d\u0924\u093e-\u092a\u091c\u093e\u092e\u093e<\/span>, salwar kameez \u0938\u0932\u0935\u093e\u0930-\u0915\u092e\u0940\u095b<\/span>, churidar-kurta \u091a\u0942\u095c\u0940\u0926\u093e\u0930-\u0915\u0941\u0930\u094d\u0924\u093e<\/span>, saari-blouse \u0938\u093e\u095c\u0940-\u091a\u094b\u0932\u0940<\/span> (choli), lungi-dhoti \u0932\u0941\u0902\u0917\u0940-\u0927\u094b\u0924\u0940<\/span>, … these are all the same right? Not quite.<\/p>\n

Western vocabulary has limited terms for the nuanced apparel sported by the broad spectrum of Indian men and women. Most of the above-mentioned outfits would be described in English as tunic, blouse, tights, etc.<\/p>\n

However articles of clothing in India not only vary by age, generation, and state or region, but you will find differences between urban and rural populations.<\/p>\n

Men’s Clothing:<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Modern wear:<\/strong> <\/em>If you’re getting ready to go to work, or prepping for an interview, you want to look your spiffy best. Today’s modern generation wears trousers and shirts or \u092a\u0924\u0932\u0942\u0928-\u0915\u092e\u0940\u095b<\/span>.<\/p>\n

Traditional wear:<\/strong><\/em> \u0915\u0941\u0930\u094d\u0924\u093e-\u092a\u091c\u093e\u092e\u093e<\/span> consists of a longer tunic or \u0915\u0941\u0930\u094d\u0924\u093e. They can be simple and made of cotton, or more elaborate and made of silk, studded with stones, embroidered, etc.<\/p>\n

A dhoti \u0927\u094b\u0924\u0940<\/span> (known as vaysh-tee in South India) is basically a long cloth worn to cover the lower half of the body. A \u0927\u094b\u0924\u0940<\/span> is traditional and formal and can be made of silk or cotton. In the olden days (think British Raj), officials wore dhotis as part of a “business suit” that comprised of a crisp cotton shirt and blazer or coat.<\/p>\n

These days, a \u0927\u094b\u0924\u0940<\/span> is worn by people in warmer southern states, during weddings, or at home, in lieu of lounge wear, and by members of the older and younger generation alike.<\/p>\n

You will also see dhotis worn by priests \u092a\u0941\u091c\u093e\u0930\u0940<\/span> in temples. A \u0927\u094b\u0924\u0940<\/span> is usually white \u0938\u095e\u0947\u0926<\/span> although some priests will wear saffron \u092d\u0917\u0935\u093e<\/span> (bhug-waa) or red \u0932\u093e\u0932 <\/span>(laal) dhotis.<\/p>\n
