In the last post, we learned about different kinds of clothes or outfits worn by men in India. Note that it\u00a0was only a brief list at best. If you had the time to travel the length and breadth of India, and visit small and large towns in the different states, you would find that there is more variety in Indian clothing than can be covered in a blog post.<\/p>\n

A\u00a0reader commented\u00a0… that it would be even more fascinating to learn about the variety of attire donned during different events in life … festivals, weddings, going to the temple, and so on. Indians like to dress up for different occasions like weddings, festivals, celebrations, etc. At such times they wear fancier, more elegant, versions of their daily wear. These clothes are fashioned from expensive fabric like silk. Almost every state in India has its own traditions in sarees and saree designs.<\/p>\n

Women’s Clothing:<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Modern wear:<\/strong> <\/em>\u00a0Today’s modern generation of women wears skirts, blouses, dresses, and trousers like its counterpart around the world.<\/p>\n

Traditional wear:<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0The ubiquitious \u0938\u0932\u0935\u093e\u0930-\u0915\u0941\u0930\u094d\u0924\u093e<\/span> (salwaar-kurta)\u00a0<\/em>was once almost exclusively the outfit of women in north and central India. Today, however the \u0938\u0932\u0935\u093e\u0930-\u0915\u0941\u0930\u094d\u0924\u093e<\/span> can be commonly seen throughout India. The tunic or \u0915\u0941\u0930\u094d\u0924\u093e<\/span> comes in a variety of lengths from short \u0915\u0941\u0930\u094d\u0924\u093e<\/span> to \u0915\u0941\u0930\u094d\u0924\u0940 <\/span>(kurti<\/em>) which can be worn over jeans or tights. The \u0915\u0941\u0930\u094d\u0924\u093e<\/span> can be simple and made of cotton, or more elaborate and made of silk, studded with stones, embroidered, etc.<\/p>\n

The \u0938\u0932\u0935\u093e\u0930<\/span> (salwaar)\u00a0<\/em>is a loose-fitting baggy pant worn under the \u0915\u0941\u0930\u094d\u0924\u093e<\/span>. There are different styles of \u0938\u0932\u0935\u093e\u0930<\/span>, including the \u092a\u091f\u093f\u092f\u093e\u0932\u093e \u0938\u0932\u0935\u093e\u0930<\/span> (Patiala salwaar<\/em>) which has several pleats and gathers around the hip, giving it a more flared and baggy appearance from the knee up.<\/p>\n

The \u091a\u0942\u095c\u0940\u0926\u093e\u0930-\u0915\u0941\u0930\u094d\u0924\u093e<\/span> (chudidaar-kurta<\/em>) is similar, except that the \u091a\u0942\u095c\u0940\u0926\u093e\u0930<\/span> is narrow from the knee down, and fits close to the ankle. A \u091a\u0942\u095c\u0940\u0926\u093e\u0930<\/span> is mostly worn with a longer \u0915\u0941\u0930\u094d\u0924\u093e<\/span>.<\/p>\n

India is most famous for its simplest and most elegant piece of clothing–the \u0938\u093e\u095c\u0940<\/span>\u00a0(saree<\/em>). As I mentioned before, the topic of sarees is in itself an exhaustive subject. Sarees are woven in a variety of materials from cool cotton to sheer chiffons and georgettes to traditional silks. \u0938\u093e\u095c\u0940<\/span>\u00a0is worn by young and old alike in a variety of textiles and styles.<\/p>\n

Last but not the least, is the \u0918\u093e\u0918\u0930\u093e-\u091a\u094b\u0932\u0940<\/span>\u00a0(ghaghra-choli)\u00a0<\/em>or long skirt with blouse. These are known by different names in different states and have as many different styles to their credit. The \u0918\u093e\u0918\u0930\u093e-\u091a\u094b\u0932\u0940<\/span>\u00a0is also sometimes known as \u0932\u0939\u0947\u0902\u0917\u093e-\u091a\u094b\u0932\u0940<\/span>\u00a0(lehenga choli<\/em>). Traditionally only graced by women in North India, the \u0932\u0939\u0947\u0902\u0917\u093e-\u091a\u094b\u0932\u0940<\/span>\u00a0has become somewhat of a wedding outfit trend across India.<\/p>\n

\u0938\u0932\u0935\u093e\u0930 \u0915\u0941\u0930\u094d\u0924\u093e,\u00a0\u091a\u0942\u095c\u0940\u0926\u093e\u0930 \u0915\u0941\u0930\u094d\u0924\u093e,\u00a0\u0932\u0939\u0947\u0902\u0917\u093e-\u091a\u094b\u0932\u0940,\u00a0\u0918\u093e\u0918\u0930\u093e-\u091a\u094b\u0932\u0940<\/span> … all these outfits are completed with a long scarf or \u0926\u0941\u092a\u091f\u094d\u091f\u093e<\/span> (dupatta<\/em>), worn for modesty. A \u0926\u0941\u092a\u091f\u094d\u091f\u093e<\/span> is also known as \u091a\u0941\u0928\u094d\u0928\u0940<\/span>\u00a0(chunni<\/em>) or \u0913\u095d\u0928\u0940<\/span>\u00a0(o-dha-nee<\/em>).<\/p>\n
