Language, life, and culture are inextricably entwined in a way that they can be exprienced in their richest forms when one is immersed in them, all at once.<\/div>\n

The point I’m trying to make is that learning a language is never as simple as grammar, syntax, vocabulary, or literature. The culture and locals often infuse their own flavors and unique traits into a language and how it is used.\u00a0Here are a few such colloquialisms and slangs you will definitely hear if you are in Mumbai.

1. \u091b\u094b\u095c \u0928\u093e<\/strong> <\/span>(chod na)\u00a0<\/i><\/div>\n
Literally,\u00a0chod\u00a0<\/i>\u091b\u094b\u095c means “to leave.” Here, the phrase means, “Let it go” or “Forget it.”<\/div>\n

Ex: \u0906\u091c \u091b\u094b\u095c \u0928\u093e, \u0915\u0932 \u092a\u095d\u093e\u0908 \u0915\u0930\u0924\u0947 \u0939\u0948\u0902\u0964<\/strong><\/span>

2, \u0930\u0939\u0928\u0947 \u0926\u0947<\/strong><\/span>\u0964<\/b>(rehne de<\/i>)<\/div>\n

Literally, \u0930\u0939\u0928\u0947 \u0926\u0947 \u00a0(rehne de<\/i>) means to let something be or leave something behind. In this sentence, however, it’s a way of admonishing someone for not keeping a promise by saying, “Let your promises be, … you had promised the same thing yesterday.”<\/div>\n

3. \u0915\u0941\u091b \u092d\u0940 !\u00a0\u092b\u0947\u0902\u0915 \u092e\u0924\u0964<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0(Kuch bhi! Phenk mat.)<\/i><\/div>\n
Literally,\u00a0\u0915\u0941\u091b \u092d\u0940 (kuch bhi)\u00a0<\/i>means something, and \u092b\u0947\u0915 \u092e\u0924 (phek mat)<\/i>\u00a0means don’t\u00a0\u092e\u0924\u00a0throw\u00a0\u092b\u0947\u0902\u0915.<\/div>\n

However, here, put together it means “Stop telling me ridiculous things!”\u00a0\u092b\u0947\u0915 \u092e\u0924 can also used be used by itself when you think someone is not telling you the truth.<\/div>\n
[Please note that these are extreme colloquialisms to be used with someone very familiar to you. ]<\/div>\n

Quite literally, this phrase means “Get down.” \u00a0\u0928\u0940\u091a\u0947 = down\/below and \u0909\u0924\u0930 = get down<\/div>\n
However it’s often used to jestingly bring back to earth a friend who is riding high from a compliment or self adulation.<\/div>\n

Ex. When you have had enough of a friend’s bragfest about his recent felicitation for outstanding sales you would say: “\u091a\u0932 \u0928\u0940\u091a\u0947 \u0909\u0924\u0930\u0964<\/strong><\/span>”\u00a0
