I’m currently traveling in India and my work brings me to a relatively newer sprawl of the\u00a0Bengaluru \u0936\u0939\u0930<\/span> city (shahar<\/em>). This area \u092f\u0939 \u091c\u0917\u0939<\/span>, (yeh jagah)<\/em> which has mushroomed \u092a\u0928\u092a\u093e \u0939\u0948<\/span> (panapaa hai) as a response to the IT industry, is peppered with paying guest accommodations. Every morning \u0939\u0930 \u0938\u0941\u092c\u0939<\/span> (har subah<\/em>) a veritable ocean of young professionals in the IT industry crowds buses and streets \u0938\u095c\u0915<\/span> (sadak)<\/em>. In the evenings, this same crowd \u092d\u0940\u095c<\/span> (bheed<\/em>) pours into restaurants and streetside eateries \u0920\u0947\u0932\u093e <\/span>(thay-la<\/em>) which visually outnumber any other kind of business \u0935\u094d\u092f\u093e\u092a\u093e\u0930<\/span> (vyaapaar) <\/em>in the area.<\/p>\n

A characteristic of any in-demand location is the feverish construction of more apartment buildings \u0907\u092e\u093e\u0930\u0924\u0947\u0902<\/span> (imaaratein<\/em>) to meet the demand \u092e\u093e\u0902\u0917<\/span> (maang<\/em>). As I weave my way through narrow neighborhood streets, I can hear the constant sound of hammer \u0939\u0925\u094b\u095c\u093e<\/span> (hathoda<\/em>) on stones \u092a\u0924\u094d\u0925\u0930<\/span> (patthar<\/em>) and feel the fine concrete dust in my hair \u092c\u093e\u0932<\/span> (baal<\/em>) , face \u091a\u0947\u0939\u0930\u093e<\/span> (chehraa), and on my skin \u0924\u094d\u0935\u091a\u093e<\/span> (tvachaa<\/em>).<\/p>\n

The buildings are being raised \u0916\u095c\u0947 \u0915\u0930\u0928\u093e<\/span> (khade karna<\/em>) at a rapid pace \u0924\u0947\u095b \u0917\u0924\u093f<\/span> (tez gati)<\/em>. Infrastructure sadly remains at a standstill, with open sewers \u0916\u0941\u0932\u0947\u00a0\u0928\u093e\u0932\u0947<\/span> (khule\u00a0<\/em>naale<\/em>) and overflowing garbage \u0915\u091a\u0930\u093e <\/span>(kachra<\/em>) barely able to keep pace with the growing population \u0906\u092c\u093e\u0926\u0940<\/span> (aabadi<\/em>).<\/p>\n
