\nOn Monday, August 21 2017, scores of people across North America momentarily held their breath as they put on viewing goggles to witness the total solar eclipse \u0938\u0902\u092a\u0942\u0930\u094d\u0923 \u0938\u0942\u0930\u094d\u092f\u0917\u094d\u0930\u0939\u0923\u00a0(sampoorna surya grahan<\/i>). Those who were not lucky enough to live near the path of the total solar eclipse, traveled from near and far to witness the solar flare that took shape of a diamond ring when the moon \u091a\u0902\u0926\u094d\u0930\/\u091a\u093e\u0901\u0926\u00a0(chandra\u00a0<\/i>\/\u00a0chaand<\/i>) fully covered the sun \u0938\u0942\u0930\u094d\u092f\/\u0938\u0942\u0930\u091c\u00a0 (soorya\u00a0<\/i>\/ sooraj) for a few minutes. Such a phenomenon was last seen in North America in 1979!<\/p>\n

In India, many beliefs \u0927\u093e\u0930\u0923\u093e (dhaarna<\/i>) and practices exist in connection with a solar eclipse. According to Hindu mythology \u0939\u093f\u0928\u094d\u0926\u0942 \u092a\u094c\u0930\u093e\u0923\u093f\u0915 \u0915\u0925\u093e (Hindu pauranik katha<\/i>), a solar eclipse is considered inauspicious \u0905\u0936\u0941\u092d (ashubh<\/i>)\u00a0since it briefly takes away the greatest life-force–The Sun. This brief disappearance of the sun is considered to be a harbinger of evil \u0905\u092e\u0902\u0917\u0932 (amangal<\/i>).<\/div>\n

Food is neither cooked nor eaten during a solar eclipse.. Food that was cooked before the eclipse, and stored during the eclipse is not eaten either. I remember the call of beggars \u092d\u093f\u0916\u093e\u0930\u0940 \/\u092d\u093f\u0915\u094d\u0937\u0941\u0915 (bhikhaari\u00a0<\/i>\/ bhikshuk) asking for the food that would be discarded post-eclipse. They would come out in droves and shout “Sute grahan, dya dhan<\/i>,” (“The eclipse has passed. Please give us your wealth\/food.) in Marathi, the language spoken in Maharashtra.<\/div>\n
At the school where I work, many students of Indian origin remained absent since tradition and beliefs also prohibit one from going out during an eclipse.<\/div>\n
