Last week, we reviewed counting and cardinal numbers \u00a0in Hindi \u0939\u093f\u0902\u0926\u0940 \u0917\u093f\u0928\u0924\u0940<\/span>. Let’s extend this to counting the days of the lunar cycle, and an introduction to ordinal numbers. The names for the days of the waxing\/waning moon phase are “ordinal” in nature and are referred to by words that indicate their “position” or “order” in the lunar phase (waxing or waning).<\/p>\n

The Hindu lunar month<\/strong> is called \u0939\u093f\u0928\u094d\u0926\u0942\u00a0\u092e\u093e\u0938\/\u092e\u0939\u0940\u0928\u093e<\/span>. It is comprised of\u00a0two fortnights — the period of the waning moon<\/strong> \u0915\u0943\u0937\u094d\u0923 \u092a\u0915\u094d\u0937<\/span> (Krishna paksh<\/em>)\u00a0and the period of the waxing moon<\/strong>\u00a0\u0936\u0941\u0915\u094d\u0932 \u092a\u0915\u094d\u0937<\/span> (Shukla<\/em> paksha).\u00a0\u0915\u0943\u0937\u094d\u0923 \u092a\u0915\u094d\u0937 ends in the new moon<\/strong> \u0905\u092e\u093e\u0935\u093e\u0938\u094d\u092f\u093e<\/span>\u00a0(amavasya<\/em>) while the\u00a0\u0936\u0941\u0915\u094d\u0932 \u092a\u0915\u094d\u0937 ends in \u092a\u0942\u0930\u094d\u0923\u093f\u092e\u093e<\/span>\u00a0(poornima<\/em>) or full moon<\/strong> night. In Bollywood movies you will often hear the full moon night referred to as \u092a\u0942\u0928\u092e \u0915\u0940 \u0930\u093e\u0924<\/span>\u00a0(poonam ki raat<\/em>), when lovers plan rendezvous in the moonshine.<\/p>\n

Both, the\u00a0\u0915\u0943\u0937\u094d\u0923 \u092a\u0915\u094d\u0937 and \u0936\u0941\u0915\u094d\u0932 \u092a\u0915\u094d\u0937 have 15 days each, or a fortnight. The days of each of these are as follows:<\/p>\n

Learning these will not only make it easier for you to remember (and construct) ordinal numbers, it will enable you to understand references to the days in the phases in the Lunar cycle, especially during the festive months where observances are made on specific days like navami \u0928\u0935\u092e\u0940<\/span>,<\/em>\u00a0dashami \u0926\u0936\u092e\u0940<\/span>, and so forth.<\/p>\n
