In this next poem I’ll share with you, Ludhianvi once again manages to upend a traditional concept and transform it into an entirely different meditation on justice, the rights of the oppressed and the corruption of those in power. The following poem, titled “26 January\/\u0968\u096c \u091c\u0928\u0935\u0930\u0940\/\u062c\u0646\u0648\u0631\u06cc \u06f2\u06f6,” refers to India’s Republic Day, which is one of the holidays that celebrates India’s Independence from the British Empire in 1947 (the other days are India’s Independence Day on August 15th and Gandhi Jayanti\/\u0917\u093e\u0902\u0927\u0940 \u091c\u092f\u0902\u0924\u0940, celebrating Mahatma Gandhi’s birthday, on October 2nd). Specifically, India\u2019s Republic Day commemorates 26 January 1950, the day on which the Constitution of Independent India was put into effect; this day marks the occasion on which the newly-formed country promulgated and instituted its own independent governing document to replace the British \u201cGovernment of India Act\u201d (1935) that had previously been in place. Additionally, on this day in 1930, the Indian National Congress declared Indian Independence (Purna Swaraj\/\u092a\u0942\u0930\u094d\u0923 \u0938\u094d\u0935\u0930\u093e\u091c) from the British, although this declaration would not go into formal effect until 17 years later.<\/p>\n

Ludhianvi\u2019s poem, instead of an unquestioning celebration of India\u2019s victory in obtaining independence and asserting the validity of its own democratic status, critiques and calls into question the values of the society evolving during the time of India\u2019s first prime minister, Jawaharlal Nehru\/\u091c\u0935\u093e\u0939\u0930\u0932\u093e\u0932 \u0928\u0947\u0939\u0930\u0942. He speaks with disillusionment and sadness of how people continue to employ religion to brutally divide themselves from others and with disappointment of the golden promises of an independent future that have not been fulfilled in a post-Independence India ridden with the exploitation of the poor and the hypocrisy of the powerful. While reading this poem, you will notice it is not in a couplet style as was Ludhianvi\u2019s \u201cTaj Mahal\/\u0924\u093e\u091c \u092e\u0939\u0932\/\u062a\u0627\u062c \u0645\u062d\u0644\u201d; while \u201cTaj Mahal\u201d is in a \u201cghazal\u201d (\u0917\u093c\u091c\u093c\u0932) style of Urdu poetry (made up of rhyming couplets of the same meter and a refrain: \u201c\u092e\u0947\u0930\u0940 \u092e\u0939\u092c\u0942\u092c, \u0915\u0939\u0940\u0902 \u0914\u0930 \u092e\u093f\u0932\u093e\u0915\u0930 \u092e\u0941\u091d\u0938\u0947\u201d), \u201c26 January\u201d is a nazm (\u0928\u091c\u093c\u094d\u092e) or, in this case, a 20-line poem with an alternating rhyme scheme and a rhyming couplet at the end. However, there are many different types of nazms with differing rhyme schemes.<\/p>\n
