January is the the time of the harvest festival Pongal in South India. In Maharashtra and parts of Western India, the same day heralds Makar Sankranti <strong><span class=\"shortcode-highlight\">\u092e\u0915\u0930 \u0938\u0902\u0915\u094d\u0930\u093e\u0902\u0924\u0940<\/span><!--\/.shortcode-highlight--><\/strong>,\u00a0while different parts of North India welcomes this festival as Lohri <strong><span class=\"shortcode-highlight\">\u0932\u094b\u095c\u0940<\/span><!--\/.shortcode-highlight--><\/strong> and Baisakhi <strong><span class=\"shortcode-highlight\">\u092c\u0948\u0938\u093e\u0916\u0940<\/span><!--\/.shortcode-highlight--><\/strong>, among other harvest celebrations.<\/p>\n<div>In Gujarat\u00a0<strong><span class=\"shortcode-highlight\">\u092e\u0915\u0930 \u0938\u0902\u0915\u094d\u0930\u093e\u0902\u0924\u0940<\/span><!--\/.shortcode-highlight--><\/strong>\u00a0is also the time when Uttarayan <strong><span class=\"shortcode-highlight\">\u0909\u0924\u094d\u0924\u0930\u093e\u092f\u0923<\/span><!--\/.shortcode-highlight--><\/strong> is celebrated. This observance marks the passing of winter <strong><span class=\"shortcode-highlight\">\u0938\u0930\u094d\u0926\u0940<\/span><!--\/.shortcode-highlight--><\/strong> (<i>sardi<\/i>) and heralds summer <strong><span class=\"shortcode-highlight\">\u0917\u0930\u094d\u092e\u0940<\/span><!--\/.shortcode-highlight--><\/strong> (<i>garmi<\/i>). Kite <strong><span class=\"shortcode-highlight\">\u092a\u0924\u0902\u0917 <\/span><!--\/.shortcode-highlight-->\u00a0<\/strong>(<i>patang)\u00a0<\/i>flying is the most-awaited and noted festivity during <strong><span class=\"shortcode-highlight\">\u0909\u0924\u094d\u0924\u0930\u093e\u092f\u0923<\/span><!--\/.shortcode-highlight--><\/strong> that grips Gujarat leading up to the 14th of January every year.
