It is not only know to promote good health\u00a0<b>\u0906\u0930\u094b\u0917\u094d\u092f<\/b>\u00a0(<i>aarogya),\u00a0<\/i>it is also used in a variety of daily rituals and auspicious traditions throughout India.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>1. In cooking,\u00a0<b>\u0939\u0932\u094d\u0926\u0940\u00a0<\/b>is used not only as a spice, but also for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>2. When I was growing up, and even today,\u00a0<b>\u0939\u0932\u094d\u0926\u0940\u00a0\u0926\u0942\u0927<\/b>\u00a0(<i>haldi doodh)\u00a0<\/i>or\u00a0<b>\u0939\u0932\u094d\u0926\u0940\u00a0<\/b>stirred into hot milk\u00a0<b>\u0926\u0942\u0927<\/b>\u00a0was an effective remedy for a bad cough\u00a0<b>\u0916\u093e\u0902\u0938\u0940<\/b>\u00a0(<i>khaansee<\/i>).<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>3. Cuts, minor wounds\u00a0<b>\u0918\u093e\u0935<\/b>\u00a0 (<i>ghaav)\u00a0<\/i>and scrapes\u00a0<b>\u0916\u0930\u094b\u0902\u091a<\/b>\u00a0(<i>kharonch)\u00a0<\/i>were effectively treated with an application of a\u00a0<b>\u0939\u0932\u094d\u0926\u0940<\/b>\u00a0paste made with water.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>4.\u00a0<b>\u0939\u0932\u094d\u0926\u0940\u00a0<\/b>contains curcumin which gives it its golden yellow color. It is this property of\u00a0\u00a0<b>\u0939\u0932\u094d\u0926\u0940<\/b>\u00a0 that is also said to make the skin\u00a0<b>\u0924\u094d\u0935\u091a\u093e<\/b>\u00a0(<i>tvachaa)\u00a0<\/i>glow. For this reason, it is believed that\u00a0<b>\u0939\u0932\u094d\u0926\u0940<\/b>\u00a0 is applied to the face, hands, and feet of a bride\u00a0<b>\u0926\u0941\u0932\u094d\u0939\u0928\u00a0<\/b>(<i>dulhan<\/i>)\u00a0before the wedding.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><b>\u0939\u0932\u094d\u0926\u0940 \u0915\u0941\u092e\u0915\u0941\u092e<\/b>\u00a0(<i>haldi kumkum)\u00a0<\/i>is\u00a0another tradition followed in some regions of India, where\u00a0<b>\u0939\u0932\u094d\u0926\u0940<\/b>\u00a0and\u00a0<b>\u0915\u0941\u092e\u0915\u0941\u092e<\/b>\u00a0(<i>kumkum<\/i>) or vermilion\u00a0are presented to married woman in acknowledgement of their marital status and to wish for its health and longevity. Although these events are social in nature, they are observed on religious or auspicious days in the Hindu calendar.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>5. In South India, a weekly ritual involves the application of\u00a0<b>\u0939\u0932\u094d\u0926\u0940<\/b>\u00a0mixed with sesame oil\u00a0<b>\u0924\u093f\u0932 \u0915\u093e \u0924\u0947\u0932<\/b>\u00a0(<i>til ka tel<\/i>)\u00a0on one&#8217;s body, followed by a hot water bath. However, in more traditional households, the\u00a0<b>\u0939\u0932\u094d\u0926\u0940<\/b>\u00a0rhizome is ground on a rough stone to make a paste which is then applied to the body.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><b>\u0939\u0932\u094d\u0926\u0940<\/b>\u00a0has a unique and strong flavor which not everyone finds palatable.
