In many places, and also where I grew up in cosmopolitan Mumbai, if you are offered\u00a0<b><span style=\"color: #0000ff\">\u092a\u0947\u095d\u093e<\/span><\/b>\u00a0(<i>pedha)\u00a0<\/i>by the joyous family, then you can safely infer that a baby boy has arrived into their midst. On the other hand, the birth of a baby girl is celebrated by distributing\u00a0<b><span style=\"color: #0000ff\">\u092c\u0930\u094d\u095e\u0940<\/span><\/b>\u00a0(<i>barphi<\/i>). [Both are milk-based sweets with different preparation methods and with some variation in taste and form.]<\/p>\n<div>Then follow the string of traditions that begin with the naming ceremony\u00a0<b><span style=\"color: #0000ff\">\u0928\u093e\u092e\u0915\u0930\u0923\u00a0<\/span><\/b>(<i>naamkaran)\u00a0<\/i>which is a rite of passage in Hindu traditions. In a religious ceremony presided over by a priest, the baby is given its name. In olden and more traditional days, this was a privilege reserved for an aunt or a family elder. My name was chosen by my aunt, although my sister, who is much younger, was named by my parents.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>It is common in Indian homes to see newborns bundled up at all times, sometimes regardless of weather. Tradition also doesn&#8217;t allow the mother to go outdoors for nearly 40 days after the birth of the child. Explanations for these are varied and can be a topic of discussion in themselves. [In modern times\u00a0<b><span style=\"color: #0000ff\">\u0906\u0927\u0941\u0928\u093f\u0915 \u0938\u092e\u092f<\/span><\/b>\u00a0(<i>aadhunik samay<\/i>), however, such practices are difficult to follow, especially with the increasing number of working women in India, who don&#8217;t have the luxury of abundant maternity leave.]<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>To ward off evil, Indians place large dots of kohl\u00a0<b><span style=\"color: #0000ff\">\u0915\u093e\u091c\u0932<\/span><\/b>\u00a0(<i>kaajal<\/i>) or\u00a0\u00a0<b><span style=\"color: #0000ff\">\u0938\u0941\u0930\u092e\u093e<\/span><\/b>\u00a0(<i>surma<\/i>) at the temples, cheeks, and\/or center of the baby&#8217;s forehead.
