Once found in other parts of the world and in \u092a\u0942\u0930\u094d\u0935\u0940 <\/span>(poorvi<\/i>\/eastern) and \u092e\u0927\u094d\u092f<\/span>\u00a0(madhya<\/i>\/central) India, it is now believed to make its \u0935\u093f\u0936\u0947\u0937<\/span>\u00a0(vishesh<\/i>\/exclusive) domain within the confines of the \u0917\u093f\u0930 \u0935\u0928 \u0930\u093e\u0937\u094d\u091f\u094d\u0930\u0940\u092f \u0909\u0926\u094d\u092f\u093e\u0928<\/span>\u00a0(Gir van raashtriya udyaan<\/i>\/Gir Forest National Park) in Gujarat.<\/p>\n

According to recent news reports, a large number (\u092c\u0921\u093c\u0940 \u0938\u0902\u0916\u094d\u092f\u093e<\/span>\/badi sankhya<\/i>) of Asiatic lions \u0915\u0940\u00a0\u092e\u0943\u0924\u094d\u092f\u0941 \u0939\u094b \u0917\u0908<\/span>\u00a0(ki mrutyu ho gayi<\/em>\u00a0\/died) in the past year, under reportedly \u0905\u092a\u094d\u0930\u093e\u0915\u0943\u0924\u093f\u0915<\/span>\u00a0(a-praakrutik\/<\/i>unnatural) \u092a\u0930\u093f\u0938\u094d\u0925\u093f\u0924\u093f\u092f\u094b\u0902 \u092e\u0947\u0902<\/span>\u00a0(paristhitiyon mein<\/i>\/under … circumstances). Some of these included death from falling into \u0916\u0941\u0932\u0947 \u0915\u0941\u0913\u0902<\/span>\u00a0(khule ku-on<\/i>\/open wells) and electrocution from contact with \u092c\u093f\u091c\u0932\u0940 <\/span>(bijli<\/i>\/electric) \u0915\u0947 (ke\/<\/i>of) \u092c\u093e\u0921\u093c<\/span><\/i>\u00a0(baad\/<\/i>fences) put up by farmers for protection from the lions.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The Gujarat High Court was motioned to \u091c\u093e\u0902\u091a<\/span>\u00a0(jaanch<\/i>\/investigate) this matter through a \u0938\u093e\u0930\u094d\u0935\u091c\u0928\u093f\u0915 \u0939\u093f\u0924 <\/span>(saarvajanik hita<\/i>\/public interest) \u092e\u0941\u0915\u0926\u092e\u093e <\/span>(mukadama<\/i>\/litigation) filed by Biren Pandya, a \u0935\u0928\u094d\u092f\u091c\u0940\u0935<\/span>\u00a0(vanyajeev<\/i>\/wildlife) \u0915\u093e\u0930\u094d\u092f\u0915\u0930\u094d\u0924\u093e (kaaryakarta<\/i>\/activist).<\/div>\n
In a related matter, a public interest litigation was ordered by the Gujarat HC’s own initiative, to look into the reported death of 182 Asiatic lions in the last 2 years. The Gujarat HC ordered (\u0906\u0926\u0947\u0936 \u0926\u093f\u092f\u093e<\/span>\/aadesh diya<\/i>) the state government to implement \u0938\u0941\u0930\u0915\u094d\u0937\u093e<\/span>\u00a0(suraksha<\/i>\/safety) \u0909\u092a\u093e\u092f<\/span>\u00a0(upaay<\/i>\/measures) like building walls around open wells, as well as \u092a\u094d\u0930\u0917\u0924\u093f \u0915\u0940 \u0928\u093f\u0917\u0930\u093e\u0928\u0940 \u0915\u0930\u0947\u0902<\/span>\u00a0(pragati ki nigrani karen<\/i>\/monitor progress) of these measures. Fund allocations per animal were questioned by the HC as were the state’s policies on preventive care and \u091f\u0940\u0915\u093e\u0915\u0930\u0923<\/span>\u00a0(teekakaraN<\/i>\/vaccination) of the lions against \u0918\u093e\u0924\u0915 \u092c\u0940\u092e\u093e\u0930\u0940<\/span>\u00a0(ghaatak beemari<\/i>\/fatal disease).<\/div>\n

The Gir Forest National Park and Wildlife Sanctuary is also known as Sasan Gir. It is located in Talala Gir in Gujarat, across an expanse of 545 sq mi. This includes 100 sq mi designated as a fully protected national park and 445 sq mi as wildlife sanctuary.<\/p>\n

The region not only draws a large number of tourists who visit for a glimpse of the majestic Asiatic lion, but also scientists and biologists who treasure the diverse ecosystem.<\/p>\n
