And there it is – the million dollar question. With\u00a0this blog, we’ll get a bit frivolous and discuss one of the most publicized weddings (\u0936\u093e\u0926\u0940\/shaadi, \u0935\u093f\u0935\u093e\u0939\/vivaah)<\/strong> the Bollyworld has witnessed in recent memory (besides that of Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas, of course): that of Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone.<\/p>\n

A classic Bollywood film often begins with seemingly star-crossed lovers (\u092a\u094d\u0930\u0947\u092e\u0940\/premi, technically \u092a\u094d\u0930\u0947\u092e\u093f\u0915\u093e\/premikaa, refers to a female lover)<\/strong>\u00a0 and ends happily with a wedding, uniting two families (\u092a\u0930\u093f\u0935\u093e\u0930\/parivaar, \u0916\u093c\u093e\u0928\u0926\u093e\u0928\/khaandaan)<\/strong> that were, perhaps, at odds with one another earlier in the film. When not watching such films, I would sometimes read Hindi tabloids about the stars (my favorite being \u0938\u094d\u091f\u093e\u0930 \u0921\u0938\u094d\u091f\/Stardust<\/em>) whiling living in India as a way to practice my Hindi and keep up with my favorite Bollywood actors (\u0905\u092d\u093f\u0928\u0947\u0924\u093e\/abhinetaa)<\/strong> and actresses (\u0905\u092d\u093f\u0928\u0947\u0924\u094d\u0930\u0940\/abhinetri)<\/strong> at the same time.<\/p>\n

As many know in the Bollywood fan (\u092a\u094d\u0930\u0936\u0902\u0938\u0915\/prashansak=fan)<\/strong> world, Deepika Padukone (\u0926\u0940\u092a\u093f\u0915\u093e \u092a\u093e\u0926\u0941\u0915\u094b\u0923) and Ranveer Singh (\u0930\u0923\u0935\u0940\u0930 \u0938\u093f\u0902\u0939) had been dating for what seems like a while now, having starred in multiple films together where they played each others’ love interests, such as \u092a\u0926\u094d\u092e\u093e\u0935\u0924 (Padmavat<\/em>), \u092c\u093e\u091c\u0940\u0930\u093e\u0935 \u092e\u0938\u094d\u0924\u093e\u0928\u0940 (Bajirao Mastani<\/em>) and \u0917\u094b\u0932\u093f\u092f\u094b\u0902 \u0915\u0940 \u0930\u093e\u0938 \u0932\u0940\u0932\u093e, \u0930\u093e\u092e \u0932\u0940\u0932\u093e (Goliyon ki Raas Leelaa\/Raam Leelaa<\/em>). It was during the filming of the latter that, as the pair’s celebrity friends hint, the two began to fall in love (\u092a\u094d\u092f\u093e\u0930 \u092e\u0947\u0902 \u092a\u0921\u093c \u091c\u093e\u0928\u093e\/pyaar me par jaanaa or x \u0915\u094b \u092a\u094d\u092f\u093e\u0930 \u0939\u094b \u0917\u092f\u093e\/x ko pyaar ho gayaa)<\/strong>. And, it is no mere coincidence that the three movies I just listed were directed by the one and only Sanjay Leela Bhansali – it is clear while watching the films that Bhansali had a “bit” of an obsession with the pair (\u091c\u094b\u0921\u093c\u0940\/jori)<\/strong>, most likely because of their sultry on-screen presence and chemistry that added further fire to the flames of his epic, visually stunning films.<\/p>\n

Although reticent about her personal life, Padukone previously dated Ranbir Kapoor (\u0930\u0923\u092c\u0940\u0930 \u0915\u092a\u0942\u0930), who was her co-star in movies like \u092c\u091a\u0928\u093e \u0910 \u0939\u0938\u0940\u0928\u094b (Bachna ae Haseeno)<\/em> and \u092f\u0939 \u091c\u0935\u093e\u0928\u0940 \u0939\u0948 \u0926\u0940\u0935\u093e\u0928\u0940 (Yah Jawaani Hai Deewani<\/em>). After the couple broke up, most likely due to Ranbir’s betrayal of Padukone, they rekindled their friendship (\u0926\u094b\u0938\u094d\u0924\u0940\/dostee)<\/strong> while filming the latter movie. After working with Ranveer Singh on several films, however, Deepika became enamored (\u092e\u0928 \u092e\u094b\u0939 \u0932\u0947\u0928\u093e\/man moh lenaa, literally to captivate one’s soul)<\/strong> of her co-star (the feeling was mutual) and the two were recently wed in a traditional (\u092a\u093e\u0930\u092e\u094d\u092a\u0930\u093f\u0915\/paaramparik)<\/strong> Konkani (Padukone is originally from Bangalore) and Sindhi (Ranveer has Sindhi roots) wedding ceremony on the banks of the picturesque Lake Como in northern Italy.<\/p>\n

Subsequently, the \u091c\u094b\u0921\u093c\u0940 returned to India, where they hosted two receptions, the most recent one being at Mumbai’s Grand Hyatt Hotel and organized by Ranveer’s parents (\u092e\u093e\u0924\u093e-\u092a\u093f\u0924\u093e\/maataa pitaa or, less formally, \u092e\u093e\u0901-\u092c\u093e\u092a\/maa-baap)<\/strong>. Previously, the two hosted their first reception in Bangalore at the Leela Palace Hotel, which was organized by Padukone’s mother and father. In October, when the couple originally announced (\u0910\u0932\u093e\u0928 \u0915\u0930\u0928\u093e\/ailaan karnaa)<\/strong> the date of their wedding, they also shared their wedding invitations (\u0936\u093e\u0926\u0940 \u0915\u093e \u0928\u093f\u092e\u0902\u0924\u094d\u0930\u0923\/shaadi kaa nimantran)<\/strong> on social media, one in Hindi and the other in English, which is a bit unusual considering that most high-profile Bollywood stars speak fluent English and oftentimes prefer to converse and read in English. Practice your Hindi a bit by trying to read the Hindi version<\/a> of the wedding invitation without peeking at the English.<\/p>\n
