Bandraites, the residents of Bandra speak a<em> combination<\/em> \u092e\u093f\u0936\u094d\u0930\u0923\u00a0 of Hindi and English with colloquial phrases. It was <em>predominantly <\/em>\u092e\u0941\u0916\u094d\u200d\u092f\u0924\u0903 Catholic, home to the many Goans, Mangloreans and East Indians (mostly converts from Hinduism to Catholicism) and Anglo Indians.<\/p>\n<p>Most<em> residents<\/em> \u0928\u093f\u0935\u093e\u0938\u093f\u092f\u094b\u0902 of Bandra used to be either Mangalorean, Goan, East Indian, or Anglo Indian. The Mangloreans are <em>originally <\/em>\u092e\u0942\u0932\u0924\u0903 from Mangalore, Karnataka while the Goans hail from Goa. The East Indians are <em>native<\/em> \u0938\u094d\u0925\u093e\u0928\u0940\u092f \u00a0to Maharashtra and the Anglo Indians have British, Italian, Dutch and Indian<em> ancestors <\/em>\u092a\u0942\u0930\u094d\u0935\u091c\u094b\u0902.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Bandra has her own rules<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Bandra Hindi usually gets the gender wrong. Not sure why, but it is <em>predictable<\/em> \u092a\u0942\u0930\u094d\u0935\u093e\u0928\u0941\u092e\u093e\u0928. For example, instead of saying, \u201c\u092e\u0947\u0930\u093e \u0928\u093e\u092e \u0928\u093f\u0915\u094b\u0932 \u0939\u0941\u0901\u0964 \u201cThey would say, \u201c\u092e\u0947\u0930\u0940 \u0928\u093e\u092e \u0928\u093f\u0915\u094b\u0932 \u0939\u0941\u0901\u0964\u201c<\/p>\n<p>Since most English language schools, even Catholic-run Convent schools, require Hindi as a second language, it is <em>taught<\/em> \u0938\u093f\u0916\u093e\u092f\u093e from second grade onwards. <em>However<\/em>, \u0939\u093e\u0932\u093e\u0902\u0915\u093f, due to lack of practice at home, most do not <em>retain<\/em> \u092c\u0928\u093e\u090f \u0930\u0916\u0928\u093e the language. Therefore, most students must hire <em>private<\/em> \u0928\u093f\u091c\u0940 tutors. Their only real-world practice of the language is when <em>communicating<\/em> \u0938\u0902\u0935\u093e\u0926 with vendors at the local markets or other service <em>providers<\/em> \u092a\u094d\u0930\u0926\u093e\u0924\u093e\u0913\u0902 such as mailmen, <em>electricians<\/em> \u092c\u093f\u091c\u0932\u0940 \u0915\u093e\u0930\u0940\u0917\u0930, <em>security<\/em> \u0938\u0941\u0930\u0915\u094d\u0937\u093e guards, etc. And even at that, the language is not in its<em> pure<\/em> \u0936\u0941\u0926\u094d\u0918 form but a mix of the many <em>dialects<\/em> \u092c\u094b\u0932\u093f\u092f\u094b\u0902 that one carries from the village into Mumbai.<\/p>\n<h2>Bandraite street speak<\/h2>\n<p>An example of how a Bandraite would say \u201c<em>Hurry up and finish your work<\/em>\u201d is \u201c\u091a\u0932\u094b \u091d\u091f\u092a\u091f \u0915\u0930\u094b\u0964\u201cinstead of \u201c\u091a\u0932\u094b \u091c\u0932\u0926\u0940 \u0915\u0930\u094b\u0964\u201c They would also add the phrase, \u201c\u092b\u091f\u093e \u092b\u091f!\u201d which means <em>quickly<\/em> in colloquial. So, while waiting for the street <em>bhel puri<\/em> \u092d\u0947\u0932 \u092a\u0941\u0930\u0940 (an Indian street food) man to make up a plate of bhel puri, a Bandraite would say, \u201c\u092d\u093e\u0908 \u091a\u0932\u094b \u091c\u0932\u0926\u0940 \u0915\u0930\u094b \u092b\u091f\u093e \u092b\u091f!\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Questions and Adverbs<\/h2>\n<p>Another instance is the transformation of the question word <i>why<\/i>\u00a0&#8211; instead of saying \u0915\u094d\u092f\u094c\u0902\u00a0\u00a0 people say, \u0915\u0948\u092f\u0915\u0941. \u00a0The sentence, \u201c<em>Why are you going in that direction<\/em>?\u201d is \u0906\u092a \u0909\u0938 \u0926\u093f\u0936\u093e \u092e\u0947\u0902 \u0915\u094d\u092f\u094b\u0902 \u091c\u093e \u0930\u0939\u0947 \u0939\u0948\u0902? However, in Bandra Hindi it is, \u201c\u0906\u092a \u0909\u0927\u0930 \u0915\u0948\u092f\u0915\u0941 \u091c\u093e\u0924\u093e \u0939\u0948\u0902.\u201d Clearly butchered but so endearing and nostalgic to those who enjoy speaking it.<\/p>\n<p>Bandraites use the phrase \u0932\u092b\u0921\u093c\u093e \u0928\u0939\u0940\u0902 \u0915\u0930\u0928\u0947 \u0915\u093e meaning <em>Do not fight<\/em>, or <em>Do not cause trouble<\/em>, instead of \u0932\u0921\u093c\u0928\u093e \u0928\u0939\u0940\u0902 when trouble brews anywhere. Or alternatively when used to win a bargain at the street vendor&#8217;s stall.<\/p>\n<p>When talking about location and referring to something <em>downstairs<\/em>, it is \u0928\u0940\u091a\u0941 instead of \u0928\u0940\u091a\u0947. When referring to something <em>behind<\/em> it is \u092a\u0940\u091a\u0941 instead of \u092a\u0940\u091a\u0947.<\/p>\n<h2>Bandra Hindi and Romance<\/h2>\n<p>There are certain words associated with romance in the Paris of India which is Bandra. The word \u092b\u093e\u0932\u0924\u0941 is used to mean <em>useless<\/em> instead of <em>odd<\/em>. For example, the correct standard Hindi for <em>He is useless<\/em> is \u0935\u0939 \u092c\u0947\u0915\u093e\u0930 \u0939\u0948. However, a Bandra Catholic person would say, \u0935\u0939 \u092b\u093e\u0932\u0924\u0941 \u0939\u0948 indicating that they like the person but think he\/she is useless. A clear tactic to deflect attention on the budding romance.<\/p>\n<p>If a guy wants to ask a girl out he will preempt the request with\u00a0 \u201cPlease don&#8217;t make \u0928\u093e\u091f\u0915\u00a0 <em>drama <\/em>(pronounced naatak) men?\u201d A mix of Hindi and English, meaning <em>Please don&#8217;t be dramatic and refuse<\/em>. They use word \u2018men\u2019 in the same way one would use \u2018man\u2019 as in \u2018oh man!\u2019 Alternatively, they say, \u201cWhat \u0928\u093e\u091f\u0915 \u092f\u093e\u0930!\u201d (pronounced naa-tak yaar) where \u2018\u092f\u093e\u0930\u2019\u00a0 is <em>friend<\/em>. Finally, the word \u0928\u0915\u0930\u093e means <em>protesting in a lighthearted flirtatious way<\/em>. So a \u091a\u093e\u0932\u0942 p<em>layer, flirtatious and easy<\/em>\u00a0guy would say that a girl who resists his advances would be making \u0928\u0915\u0930\u093e <em>protesting much<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Hindi as a language is flexible enough to mold into different forms. Some argue that these words take away the purity.
