We will take a look at the ever-evolving speech of the Hindi language in India.<\/p>\n<p>In our last <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/hindi\/social-media-influencers-and-code-switching\/\">post<\/a>, we discussed social media&#8217;s use of a mixture of Hindi and English in speech.<\/p>\n<p>The combination \u0938\u0902\u092c\u0902\u0927 of Hindi and English is very common \u0938\u093e\u092e\u093e\u0928\u094d\u092f in India among the educated class. This code-switching is popular and has several characteristics \u0932\u0915\u094d\u0937\u0923. Bollywood embraced it gladly and so have their audience.<\/p>\n<h2>15 Characteristics of Modern Urban Hindi<\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li>Young, urban, mostly upper \u090a\u092a\u0930\u0940 middle class speak this language. These speakers study at schools, colleges, and universities whose language of instruction is English.\u00a0 And therefore, they prefer \u092a\u0938\u0902\u0926 \u0915\u0930\u0928\u093e to speak mostly English interspersed with Hindi.<\/li>\n<li>There is a cool factor associated with speaking Hindi with mostly English words.<\/li>\n<li>Certain Hindi words are quickly becoming extinct thanks to lack of use.<\/li>\n<li>The younger code switchers use \u0909\u092a\u092f\u094b\u0917 more English content in their speech, as compared \u0924\u0941\u0932\u0928\u093e to the older urban code switchers who use more Hindi in their speech.<\/li>\n<li>Older generations prefer to use more Hindi because \u0915\u094d\u092f\u094b\u0902\u0915\u093f older generations \u092a\u0940\u0922\u093c\u093f\u092f\u094b\u0902 studied mostly in Hindi medium schools and then went \u092b\u093f\u0930 \u091a\u0932\u093e \u0917\u092f\u093e onto to English medium colleges and universities.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2>Rules governing the language<\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li>There are no set rules \u0915\u094b\u0908 \u0928\u093f\u0930\u094d\u0927\u093e\u0930\u093f\u0924 \u0928\u093f\u092f\u092e \u0928\u0939\u0940\u0902 for code-switching. Meaning, there are no particular \u0935\u093f\u0936\u0947\u0937 words that are typically in English or typically in Hindi in a sentence.<\/li>\n<li>Code-switching occurs with words, whole phrases \u092a\u0942\u0930\u0947 \u0935\u093e\u0915\u094d\u092f\u093e\u0902\u0936\u094b\u0902 \u0915\u0947 \u0938\u093e\u0925, and whole sentences.<\/li>\n<li>Speakers insert the mixture of Hindi and English between sentences and even in the middle of the sentence \u0935\u093e\u0915\u094d\u092f.<\/li>\n<li>Young urban college students are embarrassed \u0936\u0930\u094d\u092e\u093f\u0902\u0926\u093e to use certain Hindi words such as teacher \u0936\u093f\u0915\u094d\u0937\u0915, train \u0930\u0947\u0932\u0917\u093e\u0921\u093c\u0940, car \u0917\u093e\u0921\u093c\u0940 as they sound old fashioned \u092a\u0941\u0930\u093e\u0928\u0947 \u091c\u092e\u093e\u0928\u0947.<\/li>\n<li>Using the English version is easier and modern. For example, it is easier to say, &#8216;car&#8217; than to say \u0917\u093e\u0921\u0940 (pronounced gaa-dee, with the rolled hard dental &#8216;r&#8217;).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2>Who speaks this language<\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li>People started increasing their use of English in Hindi sentences in the 1990s.<\/li>\n<li>People are increasingly exposed to English with the advent of the internet and mobile use due to the liberalization \u0909\u0926\u093e\u0930\u0940\u0915\u0930\u0923 of the economy.<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0Millennials studying overseas and traveling all over the world pick up English words and phrases that are trendy.<\/li>\n<li>It is common to hear an older person \u090f\u0915 \u0935\u0943\u0926\u094d\u0927 \u0935\u094d\u092f\u0915\u094d\u0924\u093f speaking full Hindi sentences while the younger person \u092f\u0941\u0935\u093e \u0935\u094d\u092f\u0915\u094d\u0924\u093f is participating in the conversation in half Hindi and half English. Conducting this conversation while using both languages is quite chic.<\/li>\n<li>People who live outside India have lost some words \u0915\u0941\u091b \u0936\u092c\u094d\u0926 \u0916\u094b \u0926\u093f\u090f \u0939\u0948\u0902 due to lack of use.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2>Bollywood and Hinglish<\/h2>\n<p>Bollywood is a major influencer of this trend. Actor Rajesh Khanna said the famous line, &#8220;Pushpa, I hate tears.&#8221; in the blockbuster, Amar Prem. Lately, actor Salman Khan told his female lady love, &#8220;\u0926\u094b\u0938\u094d\u0924\u0940 \u0915\u093e \u090f\u0915 \u0909\u0938\u0942\u0932 \u0939\u0948\u0902 (there is a principle in friendship), madam: no sorry, no thank you&#8221; in the movie, Maine Pyar Kiya.<\/p>\n<p>There are<a href=\"https:\/\/www.filmfare.com\/features\/20-most-famous-bollywood-dialogue-8350-11.html\"> websites<\/a> devoted to quoting these lines from famous stars. Youngsters love to use these lines in everyday conversation displaying knowledge of not only the latest movies but also the latest trends in speaking English. The evolving trend is to speak a watered-down version of Hindi.
