The Pathans are Afghan<\/a> tribal communities \u0906\u0926\u093f\u0935\u093e\u0938\u0940 \u0938\u092e\u0941\u0926\u093e\u092f that originally come from the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province and north Baluchistan. They are one of the largest\u0938\u092c\u0938\u0947 \u092c\u0921\u093c\u093e tribal communities in the world. According to oral tradition\u092e\u094c\u0916\u093f\u0915 \u092a\u0930\u0902\u092a\u0930\u093e of history, they believe they are the descendants\u0935\u0902\u0936 of the biblical King Saul.<\/p>\n

History of the Pathans<\/h2>\n

The Pathans\u092a\u0920\u093e\u0928\u094b\u0902 traveled to India after the Anglo-Afghan war. They would bring spices\u092e\u0938\u093e\u0932\u0947, dried fruit, and other items from their world into India. As time went by and laws got tougher\u092e\u0941\u0936\u094d\u0915\u093f\u0932, they found it difficult to go back and forth and many would remain\u0930\u0939\u0928\u093e and marry within Indian communities. They are fiercely loyal \u0935\u092b\u093e\u0926\u093e\u0930 to their tribe and even though they migrate\u092a\u094d\u0930\u0935\u093e\u0938 and marry within Indian communities, they remain true to their loyalties and culture.<\/p>\n

The Pathans are tall, imposing\u092a\u094d\u0930\u092d\u093e\u0935\u0936\u093e\u0932\u0940 and well built. They work in Mumbai<\/a> as laborers\u092e\u091c\u0926\u0942\u0930 in the petroleum factories\u0915\u093e\u0930\u0916\u093e\u0928\u094b\u0902 and at the dockyard\u0917\u094b\u0926\u0940. Many wealthy businessmen\u0905\u092e\u0940\u0930 \u0935\u094d\u092f\u0935\u0938\u093e\u092f\u0940 \u00a0also employed them as security guards\u0938\u0941\u0930\u0915\u094d\u0937\u093e \u0917\u093e\u0930\u094d\u0921.<\/p>\n

Pathans have a universal\u0938\u093e\u0930\u094d\u0935\u0924\u094d\u0930\u093f\u0915 code of conduct \u0906\u091a\u093e\u0930 \u0938\u0902\u0939\u093f\u0924\u093e called Pukhto or Pashtunwali with values of honor\u0938\u092e\u094d\u092e\u093e\u0928, hospitality\u092e\u0947\u0939\u092e\u093e\u0928\u0928\u0935\u093e\u095b\u0940, and reciprocity\u092a\u093e\u0930\u0938\u094d\u092a\u0930\u093f\u0915\u0924\u093e. They live by these codes and appoint leaders who hold them accountable\u091c\u0935\u093e\u092c\u0926\u0947\u0939. The Jarga or tribal council\u091c\u0928\u091c\u093e\u0924\u0940\u092f \u092a\u0930\u093f\u0937\u0926 hold them accountable at the community\u0938\u092e\u0941\u0926\u093e\u092f-\u092d\u093e\u0935\u0928\u093e level.<\/p>\n

They live around Jacob\u2019s Circle and Ballard Pier in Mumbai. This is an area close to the docks with many warehouses\u0917\u094b\u0926\u093e\u092e\u094b\u0902. Typically, a group of Pathans would rent\u0915\u093f\u0930\u093e\u092f\u093e a large space and hire a cook. Their food is not spicy\u092e\u0938\u093e\u0932\u0947\u0926\u093e\u0930 although it has assimilated\u0906\u0924\u094d\u092e\u0938\u093e\u0924 many Indian spices over the years. They eat on a dastarkhan, out of a big common\u0938\u093e\u0930\u094d\u0935\u091c\u0928\u093f\u0915 \u0915\u094d\u0937\u0947\u0924\u094d\u0930 plate. \u00a0They eat mutton cooked with gravy, accompanied \u0938\u093e\u0925 with soft baked bread.<\/p>\n

Famous Afghan Pathans<\/h2>\n

Mumbai\u2019s underworld \u0917\u093f\u0930\u094b\u0939\u094b\u0902 kingpin, Karim Lala was the head of one such community. He cooperated\u0938\u0939\u092f\u094b\u0917 with the local Mumbai police and would regularly\u0928\u093f\u092f\u092e\u093f\u0924 \u0930\u0942\u092a \u0938\u0947 visit, the Pathan branch of the Special Branch CID (Criminal Investigation Department). He was responsible\u091c\u093f\u092e\u094d\u092e\u0947\u0926\u093e\u0930 for renewing the residential permits \u0906\u0935\u093e\u0938\u0940\u092f \u092a\u0930\u092e\u093f\u091f of the Pathan community.<\/p>\n

Some Pathans like Salim Khan, the scriptwriter, Adnan Sami \u2013 musician, and Dilip Kumar, one of Bollywood\u2019s famous actors have made it in Bollywood<\/a>. Dilip Kumar helped scriptwriters\u092a\u091f\u0915\u0925\u093e \u0932\u0947\u0916\u0915 with the nuances of Urdu during the transition to talking films.<\/p>\n

Also, Salman Khan, Aamir Khan, and Shahrukh Khan, taking their cues from their predecessors speak both Urdu and Hindi. Urdu is like Hindi but has more literary nuance\u0938\u093e\u0939\u093f\u0924\u094d\u092f\u093f\u0915 \u092c\u093e\u0930\u0940\u0915\u093f\u092f\u094b\u0902 s that are perfect for the stage\u092e\u0902\u091a and screen.<\/p>\n

Salim Khan, Salman Khan\u2019s father, is from the Swat region in Pakistan, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. He wrote the screenplay\u092a\u091f\u0915\u0925\u093e for Zanzeer, a Bollywood hit that is about an underworld don who runs a gambling den\u091c\u0941\u090f \u0915\u0940 \u092e\u093e\u0902\u0926 \u2013 albeit with honesty. The principal character \u092e\u0941\u0916\u094d\u092f \u091a\u0930\u093f\u0924\u094d\u0930 was based on a Pathan. \u00a0He wrote his story based on his observations of the Afghan community.<\/p>\n
