I recently watched\u0926\u0947\u0916\u093e a delightful Hindi<\/a> Bollywood movie\u091a\u0932\u091a\u093f\u0924\u094d\u0930 on Netflix. The movie, Motichoor Chaknachoor,<\/a> was filmed \u092b\u093f\u0932\u094d\u092e\u093e\u092f\u093e \u0917\u092f\u093e \u0925\u093e in the city of Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh. My current favorite \u0935\u0930\u094d\u0924\u092e\u093e\u0928 \u092a\u0938\u0902\u0926\u0940\u0926\u093e Bollywood actor, Nawazuddin Siddiqui was the main actor \u092e\u0941\u0916\u094d\u092f \u0905\u092d\u093f\u0928\u0947\u0924\u093e, in this comedy. Nawazuddin is a character actor \u091a\u0930\u093f\u0924\u094d\u0930 \u0905\u092d\u093f\u0928\u0947\u0924\u093e who has featured in many amazing serious roles, therefore \u0907\u0938\u0932\u093f\u090f this was an off character, a role for him.<\/p>\n

At first, it started normally \u0938\u093e\u092e\u093e\u0928\u094d\u092f \u0930\u0942\u092a \u0938\u0947 and I could understand Hindi but then I noticed \u0926\u0947\u0916\u093e there were words that were strange \u092f\u0939 \u0905\u091c\u0940\u092c \u0925\u093e in sound and not Hindi. For example, \u0909\u0926\u093e\u0939\u0930\u0923 \u0915\u0947 \u0932\u093f\u090f, I heard the actor say, \u0915\u093e \u2018ka\u2019 instead of \u0915\u094d\u092f\u093e \u2018Kya\u2019 for \u2018what\u2019 and \u0915\u093f\u0924\u0947\u0902 \u2018kiten\u2019 instead of \u0915\u0939\u093e\u0901 \u2018kahan\u2019 for \u2018where\u2019. I thought maybe it is Punjabi. I paused the movie \u092e\u0948\u0902 \u092b\u093f\u0932\u094d\u092e \u0930\u0941\u0915\u093e and turned to Google. I discovered \u092a\u0924\u093e \u091a\u0932\u093e they were speaking \u092c\u094b\u0932\u0928\u0947\u0935\u093e\u0932\u093e in or Bundeli.<\/p>\n

The Rajput Connection<\/h2>\n

Bundeli is a dialect \u0909\u092a\u092d\u093e\u0937\u093e of Western Hindi. The natives of Bundelkhand speak this language. Bundelkhand is inhabited \u0928\u093f\u0935\u093e\u0938 by the Bendelas which is a clan \u0935\u0902\u0936 of Rajputs. It is spoken \u092f\u0939 \u092c\u094b\u0932\u093e \u091c\u093e\u0924\u093e \u0939\u0948 in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and certain \u0915\u094b\u0908 \u090f\u0915 parts of Bihar.<\/p>\n

As I listened in for more Bundeli words during \u0915\u0947 \u0926\u094c\u0930\u093e\u0928 the movie I made a list to compare \u0924\u0941\u0932\u0928\u093e \u0915\u0930\u0928\u093e to Hindi. For example, the girl is \u092e\u094b\u0921\u0940 \u2018mori\u2019 with a rolled \u2018d\u2019 sound and \u092e\u094b\u0921\u093e \u2018boy\u2019 is \u2018mor\u2019. I wondered if these words originated from the words for peacock \u092e\u094b\u0930 and peahen \u092e\u094b\u0930\u0928\u0940?<\/p>\n

This language has 10 vowels \u0938\u094d\u0935\u0930 and 27 consonants \u0935\u094d\u092f\u0902\u091c\u0928 compared to the 14 vowels and 33 consonants of Devanagari. Bundeli nouns \u0938\u0902\u091c\u094d\u091e\u093e and pronouns \u0938\u0930\u094d\u0935\u0928\u093e\u092e are also different \u0905\u0932\u0917 from Hindi.<\/p>\n

Bundeli does sound a little like Bengali in that its vowel sounds are more rounded \u0917\u094b\u0932\u093e\u0915\u093e\u0930 than standard Hindi. It is not difficult \u0915\u0920\u093f\u0928 to understand as the main words \u092e\u0941\u0916\u094d\u092f \u0936\u092c\u094d\u0926 in a sentence are in Hindi with a few nouns differing.<\/p>\n

For example, they would say \u092c\u0938\u094d\u0924\u0941 \u2018bastu\u2019 instead of \u0935\u0938\u094d\u0924\u0941 \u2018vastu\u2019 trading the \u2018v\u2019 sound for a \u2018b\u2019 sound and \u0938\u094b\u092e\u092c\u0902\u0927 \u2018sombandh\u2019 instead of \u0938\u0902\u092e\u092c\u0902\u0927 \u2018sumbandh\u2019.<\/p>\n

      Bundeli has a very warm lilt to it and sounds very endearing. When I hear it now, I think of village bungalows with tree lined streets, simple stalls for shops, rickshaws drawn by men on bicycles and the sounds of village life.\u00a0 So, if you think you recognize some but not all the words in a sentence when you hear Bundeli for the first time, you are listening to a unique dialect of Western Hindi.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"\"Photo
