Ruskin Bond is a famous \u092a\u094d\u0930\u0938\u093f\u0926\u094d\u0927 author on the Indian subcontinent \u0909\u092a\u092e\u0939\u093e\u0926\u094d\u0935\u0940\u092a although little is known about him here in North America.<\/p>\n<h2>Origins<\/h2>\n<p>Ruskin Bond was born to British parents \u092e\u093e\u0924\u093e-\u092a\u093f\u0924\u093e who at that time were stationed in India. His birthplace \u091c\u0928\u094d\u092e\u0938\u094d\u0925\u0932 is Kasauli, India. His parents, Edith Clarke and Aubrey Bond separated when he was quite young \u091c\u0935\u093e\u0928, with his mother eventually marrying \u0936\u093e\u0926\u0940 an Indian man. His father died early leaving him devastated <span class=\"Y2IQFc\" lang=\"hi\">\u0924\u092c\u093e\u0939 \u0939\u094b \u0917\u092f\u093e \u0925\u093e<\/span>. Therefore,\u00a0 his grandmother \u0926\u093e\u0926\u0940 \u092e\u093e raised him in Dehra Dun, India. He went to England for a few years but his love for India drew him back. He spent some time in Delhi but was unhappy there and so moved to Mussoorie.<\/p>\n<p>Ruskin attended the Bishops Cotton school \u0935\u093f\u0926\u094d\u092f\u093e\u0932\u092f in Shimla and won many prizes \u092a\u0941\u0930\u0938\u094d\u0915\u093e\u0930 for writing even at that early age. He has written children&#8217;s books \u092c\u091a\u094d\u091a\u094b \u0915\u0940 \u0915\u093f\u0924\u093e\u092c, short stories, essays \u0928\u093f\u092c\u0902\u0927, and poems \u0915\u0935\u093f\u0924\u093e in English. His first book The Room \u0915\u0915\u094d\u0937 on the Roof \u091b\u0924 won the John Llewellyn Rhys Memorial Prize in 1957 when he was only 17 years old. The book is autobiographical \u0906\u0924\u094d\u092e\u0915\u0925\u093e\u0924\u094d\u092e\u0915 in nature and is the story of a 17-year-old Anglo Indian boy \u0932\u0921\u093c\u0915\u093e who lost both parents and had to live with his guardian \u0905\u092d\u093f\u092d\u093e\u0935\u0915 who was tyrannical \u0905\u0924\u094d\u092f\u093e\u091a\u093e\u0930\u0940.<\/p>\n<h2>Recognition<\/h2>\n<p>He has also won the Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan, and the Sahitya Akademi Award for his work.\u00a0 Schools use his books for reading materials \u092a\u0920\u0928 \u0938\u093e\u092e\u0917\u094d\u0930\u0940, while his book The Blue Umbrella \u091b\u093e\u0924\u093e was made into a Hindi film winning The National Film Award for the best children&#8217;s film in 2005.<\/p>\n<h2>Unlikely Indian<\/h2>\n<p>Ruskin wrote his books in English but people from across cultures \u0938\u0902\u0938\u094d\u0915\u0943\u0924\u093f love his work. There are translations \u0905\u0928\u0941\u0935\u093e\u0926 into <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/hindi\/the-character-of-modern-hindi\/\">Hindi<\/a> available in PDF format so that Hindi language \u092d\u093e\u0937\u093e speakers can understand the beautiful \u0938\u0941\u0902\u0926\u0930 stories.<\/p>\n<p>Bond uses the mountains \u092a\u0930\u094d\u0935\u0924 in Mussoorie as a backdrop for many \u092c\u0939\u0941\u0924 of his writings. His love \u092a\u094d\u092f\u093e\u0930 for India and for the mountain villages \u0917\u093e\u0901\u0935 is evident in his writings. He likes to take walks along the mountain paths \u092a\u0925, usually ending up in the villages or in a forest \u091c\u0902\u0917\u0932 glade. His stories focus on simple village life \u0917\u094d\u0930\u093e\u092e\u094d\u092f \u091c\u0940\u0935\u0928. He prefers to write in the morning \u0938\u0941\u092c\u0939 as there are no disturbances.<\/p>\n<p>Today he lives with his adoptive family \u092a\u0930\u093f\u0935\u093e\u0930 in a simple home in Mussoorie. Indians count <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/thread\/reflections\/my-bond-with-ruskin\/article24724574.ece\">Ruskin Bond<\/a> among their best authors \u0932\u0947\u0916\u0915.
