Whether people realize it or not, they utilize class-conscious \u0935\u0930\u094d\u0917 \u091c\u093e\u0917\u0930\u0942\u0915 ways of behavior. For example, speaking in English, shows you are upwardly mobile \u0909\u092a\u0930\u093f\u0917\u093e\u092e\u0940 \u0917\u0924\u093f\u0936\u0940\u0932\u0924\u093e. While <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/hindi\/tapori-culture-of-mumbai\/\">Tapori<\/a> is lower in status even though it has been gaining acceptance \u0938\u094d\u0935\u0940\u0915\u0943\u0924\u093f \u092a\u094d\u0930\u093e\u092a\u094d\u0924 \u0915\u0930\u0928\u093e by higher classes in recent years.\u00a0 But, did you know that even beverages \u092a\u0947\u092f, like tea and coffee, drinking indicates caste and class?<\/p>\n<h2><a href=\"https:\/\/www.coffeehunter.com\/coffee-country\/india\/#:~:text=Coffee%20was%20introduced%20to%20India,the%20Chandragiri%20hills%20of%20Karnataka.\">Origins of Coffee<\/a> in India<\/h2>\n<p>Typically, Indians prefer \u092a\u0938\u0902\u0926 \u0915\u0930\u0924\u0947 \u0939\u0948\u0902 tea to coffee unless one lives in the south where coffee drinking is more prevalent \u092a\u094d\u0930\u091a\u0932\u093f\u0924.<\/p>\n<p>Coffee originated in what is known in modern-day \u0906\u0927\u0941\u0928\u093f\u0915 \u0926\u093f\u0928 as Ethiopia, but during the Medieval era, the Arabs monopolized \u090f\u0915\u093e\u0927\u093f\u0915\u093e\u0930 the coffee trade. They exported \u0928\u093f\u0930\u094d\u092f\u093e\u0924 only roasted beans to prevent competition \u092a\u094d\u0930\u0924\u093f\u092f\u094b\u0917\u093f\u0924\u093e.<\/p>\n<p>Legend has it that the Sufi saint Baba Budan smuggled \u0924\u0938\u094d\u0915\u0930\u0940 seven coffee seeds into India on his return from a pilgrimage \u0924\u0940\u0930\u094d\u0925 \u092f\u093e\u0924\u094d\u0930\u093e to Mecca.\u00a0 He was not checked at customs since he was returning from a pilgrimage. People planted these seeds \u092c\u0940\u091c in the Chandragiri hills of Karnataka. The Budhangiri mountain range is named \u0928\u093e\u092e\u093f\u0924 after this saint.<\/p>\n<p>It is also said that the Mughals brewed \u092a\u0940\u0938\u093e coffee in the 1600s while it was the British who set up plantations \u0935\u0943\u0915\u094d\u0937\u093e\u0930\u094b\u092a\u0923 in Coorg and Wayanad in Karnataka.<\/p>\n<p>Coffee started being consumed \u0917\u094d\u0930\u0939\u0923 \u0915\u093f\u092f\u093e \u0939\u0941\u0906 by the upper castes and classes in India at this time in the 19th century. By the 20th century, the Tamil Brahmins \u092c\u094d\u0930\u093e\u0939\u094d\u092e\u0923\u094b\u0902 had started the practice of drinking coffee after initial\u092a\u094d\u0930\u093e\u0930\u0902\u092d\u093f\u0915\u00a0 reservations of it being a symbol of western modernity.<\/p>\n<h2>The humble tumbler<\/h2>\n<p>South Indians drink brewed filter coffee similar \u0938\u092e\u093e\u0928 to the Italians, except that the coffee is not that strong, but milky \u0926\u0942\u0927 \u0915\u093e and sweet with a lovely froth at the top. People serve the coffee in a rimmed tumbler \u0917\u093f\u0932\u093e\u0938 turned upside down into a small bowl\u0915\u091f\u094b\u0930\u093e. As you lift the tumbler slowly from the bowl the coffee is released into the bowl, so you can sip it while it is cooling.<\/p>\n<p>The reason for sipping coffee out of a saucer \u0924\u0936\u094d\u0924\u0930\u0940 or bowl originated with the lower castes and classes, who could not drink out of the cup for fear of polluting the cup.<\/p>\n<p>Also, goes for tea. As we pass by tea stalls \u091a\u093e\u092f \u0915\u0940 \u0926\u0941\u0915\u093e\u0928 in India, it is not uncommon to see people holding both the teacup \u091a\u093e\u092f \u0915\u093e \u092a\u094d\u092f\u093e\u0932\u093e and saucer in their hands but, sipping the tea from the saucer.<\/p>\n<p>Restaurants in major cities \u0936\u0939\u0930\u094b\u0902 in India now use the humble stainless steel tumbler to serve coffee and tea. This is an attempt to go retro and has become part of hipster style.
