1. Understand<\/h4>\n

Hindi language\u00a0\u092d\u093e\u0937\u093e <\/span>speakers have ways of expressing \u0935\u094d\u092f\u0915\u094d\u0924 themselves that may be difficult \u0915\u0920\u093f\u0928 to understand. They are used to speaking in a circular \u092a\u0930\u093f\u092a\u0924\u094d\u0930 manner, to beat about the bush, as we say. But, given time \u0938\u092e\u092f one gets used to it.<\/p>\n

2. Observe \u0927\u094d\u092f\u093e\u0928 \u0938\u0947 \u0926\u0947\u0916\u0928\u093e always<\/p>\n

Indians shake their head from side to side in a combination of a yes\/no motion to mean, ‘yes’.\u00a0 When they say no, it is with tinier side-to-side movements of their heads. 3. Orient yourself<\/h4>\n

When listening to someone speak Hindi, don\u2019t focus on the accent or grammar. Understand the message as a whole concept, not the individual words and their pronunciation \u0909\u091a\u094d\u091a\u093e\u0930\u0923. Don’t forget often, English, Urdu, and Punjabi words are used.<\/p>\n

4. Feedback<\/h4>\n

Check for understanding by repeating \u0926\u094b\u0939\u0930\u093e what they have said in a summary \u0938\u093e\u0930\u093e\u0902\u0936. Have them express what you have said in their own words. Sometimes, you will hear them say a sentence \u0935\u093e\u0915\u094d\u092f ending with a ‘no’ in question \u092a\u094d\u0930\u0936\u094d\u0928 form. This is them, checking for understanding.<\/p>\n

5. Strike a balance<\/h4>\n

7. Keep it simple<\/h4>\n

Use simple vocabulary \u0936\u092c\u094d\u0926\u093e\u0935\u0932\u0940 not complex. For example, instead of saying \u2018mitigate\u2019 say \u2018help\u2019. Although, nowadays there are whole industries \u0909\u0926\u094d\u092f\u094b\u0917\u094b\u0902 geared toward teaching Indians, American English.<\/p>\n

8.Use the \u2018w\u2019 words<\/h4>\n

Ask questions using the \u2018wh\u2019 words: who, what, where, when and why as these questions elicit simple direct answers \u091c\u0935\u093e\u092c. The norm for Indians is don’t ask, don’t tell. So if you need help \u092e\u0926\u0926 or direction \u0926\u093f\u0936\u093e \u0928\u093f\u0930\u094d\u0926\u0947\u0936 it is best to ask as many questions as possible.<\/p>\n

9. Be polite<\/h4>\n

When addressing someone do use \u092a\u094d\u0930\u092f\u094b\u0917 \u0915\u0930\u0947\u0902 their full name. Err on the side of caution as some communities \u0938\u092e\u0941\u0926\u093e\u092f don\u2019t like being addressed by their first name in formal \u0914\u092a\u091a\u093e\u0930\u093f\u0915 situations. 10. Take no offense<\/h4>\n
