China has its ancient practice<\/strong> \u092a\u094d\u0930\u093e\u091a\u0940\u0928 \u092a\u094d\u0930\u0925\u093e of Feng Shui<\/a>. India has the Vastu Shastra.<\/p>\n

Origins<\/h2>\n

The word Vastu – comes from the root word, Vas – meaning to live, dwell, stay or reside. Shastra means teaching or doctrine. So, Vastu\u00a0 Shastra is the science or doctrine of dwelling<\/strong> \u0906\u0935\u093e\u0938.<\/p>\n

We live most of our lives waking or sleeping in a home. The land, structure, and things inside a home are all subject to energy vibrations.\u00a0Vastu maintains a balance between positive and negative vibrations by arranging elements and structures in such a way as to attract or repel these energies.<\/p>\n

Therefore, the practice of Vastu is said to enhance a positive living experience enabling the family to become prosperous. Vastu maintains harmony by providing balance<\/strong> \u0938\u0902\u0924\u0941\u0932\u0928.<\/p>\n

In other words, buying or constructing a home is a complicated<\/strong> \u091c\u091f\u093f\u0932 process for followers of Vastu. They use careful consideration<\/strong> \u0938\u094b\u091a – \u0935\u093f\u091a\u093e\u0930 for each phase such as choosing a city, the plot direction, the materials, and the colors used.<\/p>\n

The principles of Vastu Shastra relate to the obvious<\/strong> \u091c\u093c\u093e\u0939\u093f\u0930 and hidden<\/strong> \u091b\u093f\u092a\u093e \u0939\u0941\u0906 energy fields in natural and constructed environments<\/strong> \u0935\u093e\u0924\u093e\u0935\u0930\u0923. Some principles are also natural, such as ventilation, sunlight, etc. Also, it is said that the principles of Vastu utilize the benefits of the abundant<\/strong> \u092a\u094d\u0930\u091a\u0941\u0930 energy of the sun in the best possible way.<\/p>\n

An example of this is the front door should face east or northeast as the sun rises bringing with it positive energy<\/strong> \u0938\u0915\u093e\u0930\u093e\u0924\u094d\u092e\u0915 \u090a\u0930\u094d\u091c\u093e to all who enter a home through the front door.\u00a0 These principles also outline the different colors for each room and who gets to sleep where.<\/p>\n

For example, the master bedroom should be occupied by the leader of the home. Not necessarily the oldest person in the home. Therefore if the dad has retired and the son or daughter are the breadwinners<\/strong> \u0915\u092e\u093e\u0928\u0947\u0935\u093e\u0932\u093e and in charge, they get to occupy the master bedroom. While dad occupies the bedroom facing northeast to encourage spirituality.<\/p>\n

According to this principle of design, each plot of land, and construction, whether for business or residence has a central area called the Brahmasthan. This area is the center from which all energies flow. This area must be kept free and be used only for meditation<\/strong> \u0927\u094d\u092f\u093e\u0928 and prayer.<\/p>\n

Followers of the Vastu Shastra believe that not following the principles of Vastu design will attract negative effects onto the lives and homes of the family. They believe that illness, material loss, death, and other negative experiences<\/strong> \u0928\u0915\u093e\u0930\u093e\u0924\u094d\u092e\u0915 \u0905\u0928\u0941\u092d\u0935 occur.<\/p>\n

The Benefits of Vastu<\/h2>\n

Creates financial abundance: Vastu believers affirm that placing the home and office in the right direction with the applicable<\/strong> \u0909\u092a\u092f\u0941\u0915\u094d\u0924 colors, artifacts, shelving materials, etc will bring about financial prosperity. Ancient Hindu texts such as the Rigveda and the Manasollasa<\/a> also detail the placement of people and things to encourage prosperity.<\/p>\n

Strengthens relationships: Newlyweds<\/strong> \u0928\u0935\u0935\u093f\u0935\u093e\u0939\u093f\u0924 believers practice Vastu when selecting even the rental they are going to live in before buying a home.\u00a0 Childrens’ rooms are painted a certain color – blue seems to be the choice or calming pastels to encourage positive behavior.<\/p>\n

Although Vastu may not be widely followed to the ‘T’, it is gaining more acceptance in this fast-paced, modern world. Just like Feng Shui, many people are using these ancient design principles to enhance their lives.<\/p>\n
