It is celebrated from the 13th day of the dark half of the lunar month \u091a\u0902\u0926\u094d\u0930 \u092e\u093e\u0938 of Ashvina until the 2nd day of the light half of the lunar month of Kartika.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/hindi\/how-america-celebrated-diwali-2021\/\">Who Celebrates Diwali<\/a>?<\/p>\n<p>Diwali is a Hindu festival, with Hindus, Sikhs, Jains and Newar Buddhists celebrating the five day festival. However, in reality \u092f\u0925\u093e\u0930\u094d\u0925 \u092e\u0947\u0902, anyone in India is welcome to celebrate it. Christians, Muslims and other communities \u0938\u092e\u0941\u0926\u093e\u092f also join their friends in celebrating this festival.<\/p>\n<p>History<\/p>\n<p>According to Hindu belief, Diwali celebrates the return of Rama, his wife Sita, and brother Laxman to Ayodhya which was his kingdom after 14 years of exile \u0928\u093f\u0930\u094d\u0935\u093e\u0938\u0928. The residents of Ayodhya were so delighted \u092a\u094d\u0930\u0938\u0928\u094d\u0928 at the return of their king and queen that they lit many oil lamps, and distributed \u0935\u093f\u0924\u0930\u093f\u0924\u00a0sweets all over the town.<\/p>\n<p>In the north of India, people celebrate Diwali over 5 days. While in the south of India they celebrate Deepawali over 4 days.<\/p>\n<p>What are the five days?<\/p>\n<p>Day 1 -Dhanteras \u0927\u0928\u0924\u0947\u0930\u0938 is dedicated to Goddess Laxmi and is the first day of the festival. On this day people clean their homes and decorate the front porches \u092c\u0930\u093e\u092e\u0926\u093e with rangoli. Rangoli are colorful designs of elephants, lotus etc made out of rice or colored powders.<\/p>\n<p>Day 2 &#8211; Chotti Diwali or Little Diwali is spent praying for ancestors \u092a\u0942\u0930\u094d\u0935\u091c and also lighting the oil lamps called diyas.<\/p>\n<p>Day 3 &#8211; Diwali is the most important and largest day of the festival. People dress up in fine clothes and jewelry \u0906\u092d\u0942\u0937\u0923 and go to perform puja at the temple or in their prayer rooms at home. Afterward they light fireworks \u0906\u0924\u0936\u092c\u093e\u091c\u093c\u0940 and diyas, as well as sparklers. Also, they feast on homemade sweets and particular foods.<\/p>\n<p>Day 4 &#8211; Gowardan Puja is dedicated to husbands and wives wherein they affirm \u0935\u093e\u0923\u0940 their love for each other like Rama and Sita. It is also the New Year and is celebrated as such in\u00a0 many regions.<\/p>\n<p>Day 5 &#8211; Bhai Dhuj or Bhai Bheej is the fifth and final day of Diwali in which brothers and sisters celebrate the bonds they share<\/p>\n<p>How do People celebrate?<\/p>\n<p>Even the Indian diaspora \u092a\u094d\u0930\u0935\u093e\u0938\u0940 gets into the celebrations! There are parties in large cities such as London and New York. People distribute \u092c\u093e\u0902\u091f\u094b gifts, sweets, and hampers of dried fruit and nuts to friends and co-workers.
