The Week of Exercises! (Passive) Posted by on Sep 22, 2017 in Icelandic grammar

Today I’m going to share a few practices with you for the passive voice, which we went over in July. I hope you find these helpful. I’ll post additional exercises over the next week, for you to get used to the passive before we finish the topic up.

Also, as a note: I’ve been having trouble keeping up with things lately, and I want to apologize for the sparse pages of my blog. I’ve received kind emails and comments from a number of you – and I want to thank for your that. The next few entries, I’m going to spend on exercises as a follow-up to July’s entries on passive voice. Then I want to wrap up passive voice (we still haven’t talked about modeling it using -st verbs).

Here are the blogs I’m referring to:

Part II

Part III

JUST THE BASICS

*For the record, these are not exercises of my own making: they are pulled from one of my Icelandic language books.

Like so:

X borðar allt brauðið = allt brauðið er borðað

X sagði söguna í gær = Sagan var sögð í gær

  • X leyfir ekki reykingar
  • X ræðir málið
  • X veiðir laxinn í net
  • X sendir bréfin í pósti
  • X skreytir húsið fyrir jólin
  • X notar bækurnar til gjafa
  • X grunar hana um lygi
  • X sýnir myndirnar í listasafninu
  • X flengir börnin ef þau láta illa
  • X þynnir súpuna með vatni

Don’t forget to use BIN if you need to: http://bin.arnastofnun.is/forsida/

And another useful tool is: http://malid.is. There, you can access a number of different dictionaries and resources – including monolingual dictionaries to some extent, etymology, and declension machines.

And once you’ve completed them, here are the answers:

A LITTLE MORE COMPLEXITY

X tamdi hestana = Hestarnir voru tamdir

X samdi söguna á síðasta ári = Sagan var samin á síðasta ári.

  • X vekur Steinu klukkan sjö á hverjum morgni
  • X lemur hundinn
  • X semur mörg lög á ári
  • X temur ljónið
  • X velur alltaf besta bitann fyrst
  • X telur peningana tvisvar
  • X skildi krakkana eftir á leikvellinum

I am finally getting round to this today… I’m really happy to get on with your help. May I share my latest discovery, I don’t know how I didn’t find it before. It’s a monolingual Icelandic dictionary online that gives pronunciation, definitions and examples of how to use words in sentences. There is also a link to BIN for declension/conjugation. http://kata.arnastofnun.is/islob (Íslensk nútímamálsorðabók). Now for the exercises. 🙂

  2. helen Col:

Hello. Having done the first exercise I don’t understand why the present tense of ‘be’ (vera) changes to the past . We are changing from active voice to passive, but do we need to change the tense too? Thank you for any explanation. 🙂

    • Meg:

@helen Col Hi Helen! Thanks for the note. It is not necessary to change the tense to past; that was my mind changing the sentences from present to past. The answers should be in present tense unless the verb indicates otherwise.

  3. helen Col:

    OK Meg, thank you. 🙂
