I\u2019ve been writing a lot these past few months about grammar \u2013 which doesn\u2019t necessarily give cultural context to Icelandic as a living language. So today my Icelandic friend, Ingimar, has volunteered to help me to introduce you to a few Icelandic slang expressions, which he condensed into a nice short story for you.<\/p>\n

Here are a few of his favorites, and the ones we used in his monologue:<\/p>\n

B\u00f6rri (M) \u2013 <\/strong>burger
\n\u00d6llari (M) <\/strong>\u2013 a beer
\nDrull \u2013 e-m a\u00f0 vera drull \u2013 <\/strong>to not give a damn
\nPappakassi (M) \u2013 <\/strong>idiot (literally, a cardboard box)
\nA\u00f0 r\u00edfa sig \u2013<\/strong> to shoot off your mouth, run your mouth
\nF\u00f6ssari (M) \u2013 <\/strong>Friday (hence f\u00f6s-)
\nF\u00e1viti (M) \u2013 <\/strong>moron (there is also a h\u00e1lfviti – half wit – this one is a “few-wit”)
\nGaur (M)\u2013 <\/strong>dude
\nHella\u00f0ur \u2013 <\/strong>wasted, drunk
\nKlukkari (M)\u2013 <\/strong>an hour
\nForriti\u00f0 (N)- <\/strong>twitter (The Program – ominous, eh?)
\n\u00de\u00e1verandi \u2013 <\/strong>my then-partner (fyrrverandi is “former”)
\nN\u00f6lli \u00a0(M)- <\/strong>nerd
\nSpa\u00f0i (M) <\/strong>\u2013 player
\nTrefill (M) – <\/strong>hipster (Because of hipster scarves)
\nPr\u00f3flj\u00f3ta \u00a0<\/strong>– that lean and hungry look that one gets in the middle of finals.(Literally, “test-ugly)
\nBasically<\/strong> – basically\/totally\/pretty much<\/p>\n

Here’s his genius composition:<\/p>\n

\u00c9g var \u00ed b\u00f6rra og \u00f6llara me\u00f0 \u00fe\u00e1verandi \u00e1 f\u00f6ssara ekkert \u00ed gangi \u00e1 forritinu, b\u00fana\u00f0 [b\u00fain a\u00f0] vera \u00ed svona klukkara, h\u00fan var \u00ed mi\u00f0ri pr\u00f3flj\u00f3tu en \u00e9g er ekki pappakassi svo m\u00e9r var drull. \u00de\u00e1 kemur einhver f\u00e1viti og f\u00e9r a\u00f0 r\u00edfa sig, kalla mig n\u00f6lla og trefil og spila sig algj\u00f6ran spa\u00f0a. \u00c9g var bara eitthva\u00f0, hva\u00f0 er \u00e1ri\u00f0 2008, vi\u00f0 erum hipsterar \u00ed dag. Klukkan a\u00f0 ganga sj\u00f6 og gaurinn basically hella\u00f0ur.<\/p>\n
