When you are telling the time in Indonesian, the word \u201cjam\u201d (pronounced like \u201cjump\u201d) is generally used. It precedes whatever time you are referring to. The word order is important as it will change the meaning. For example, if you want to say \u201ceight o\u2019clock\u201d, you will say \u201cjam delapan\u201d, but if you say \u201cdelapan jam\u201d, it means \u201ceight hours.\u201d<\/p>\n

Indonesia uses 24-hour international standard time formats when writing the time.\u00a0 When speaking the time in Indonesian it referenced on a 12-hour format with qualifiers like: pagi, sore or malam.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong>Telling time in Indonesian is influenced by the Dutch way of telling time, dating back to when the Dutch occupied Indonesia. Time is described as \u201con the hour\u201d, \u201cpast the hour (lebih\/lewat)\u201dor \u201cuntil the hour (kurang)\u201d in the Indonesian language.<\/p>\n

Indonesia is known for its \u201cjam karet\u201d or \u201crubber time\u201d (to stretch time or to be late). \u00a0Be aware that you might not be able to hold a meeting on time, but it may start one or two hours late. \u00a0This generally happens when you have an appointment with someone with a higher social status or a high-ranking government official.
