Indonesian society values education so highly, most Indonesians will put a lot of effort into getting a higher education even though an academic title will not guarantee an improved economic situation.\u00a0 The more academic titles someone has, the better he will be treated by society because he will be perceived as someone with high cognition and knowledge. \u00a0Hence, it is customary to see someone\u2019s name with many academic titles added to his name to show how highly educated he is, for example:<\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 Ir. Dra. Hj. Rini Wirawan, MSc, MBA, Ph.D. <\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 Drs. Hendra Sumarto, S.H., M.H.I.<\/strong><\/p>\n

So, it is not surprising\u00a0when they are willing to\u00a0spend time\u00a0answering your questions about their education.<\/p>\n

Let’s learn the vocabulary first before we are talking about education in Indonesian.<\/p>\n

– General<\/u><\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Sekolah vs. kuliah<\/strong>: Use \u2018sekolah\u2019 when you ask about someone\u2019s education from Kindegarden to High School. Use \u2018kuliah\u2019 when you talk about or ask someone\u2019s education higher than High School.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Example:<\/p>\n

    Q1: Anda kuliah di mana? (Where did you go to college? or Where do you go to school?<\/p>\n

    A1: Saya kuliah di Universitas Parahyangan (I went to Parahyangan University.)<\/p>\n

    Q2: Anda sekolah di mana? (Where do you go to elementary school\/middle school\/high school?<\/p>\n

    A2: Saya sekolah di SDN Cidurian\/SMPN V\/SMAN XII. (I study at Cidurian Elementary School\/… Middle School\/… High School.)<\/p>\n

    \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/strong>2. Angkatan \/Lulusan \u2026 vs. Class of \u2026<\/strong>: unlike in the US other countries, Indonesians will ask the year you start your college\/university \u2018angkatan\u2019, rather than the year \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 of the graduation \u2018class of \u00a0..\u2019<\/p>\n

    Example:<\/p>\n

    Q1: Anda angkatan tahun berapa di Parahyangan (When year did you start you study?)<\/p>\n

    A1: Saya angkatan 95. (I began my study in 1995.)<\/p>\n

    Q2: Anda lulusan tahun berapa? (Which year is your class year?<\/p>\n

    A2: Saya lulusan tahun 2001. (I am class of 2001 in …)<\/p>\n

    Note: The graduate ..<\/p>\n

    3.\u00a0Index Prestasi Kumulatif (IPK<\/strong>): GPA<\/p>\n

    Q1: Berapa IPK Anda? (What is your GPA?)<\/p>\n

    A1: IPK saya 3.9. (My GPA is 3.9.)<\/p>\n

    \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/strong>4. Lulus<\/strong>: graduate<\/p>\n

    Q1: Kapan Anda lulus SMA\/Tahun berapa Anda lulus dari SMA? (When did you graduate high school?)<\/p>\n

    A1: Saya lulus SMA tahun 2005. (I graduated from high school in 2005.)<\/p>\n

    \u00a0 \u00a0 5. Ijasah<\/strong>: diploma, certificate<\/p>\n

    Q1: Apa Anda punya ijasah SMA? (Do you have a high school diploma?)<\/p>\n

    A1: Ya. Saya punya. (Yes, I have.)<\/p>\n

    – Level of Education in Indonesia<\/u><\/p>\n

    Preschool<\/strong>: Prasekolah<\/p>\n

    Taman Kanak-Kanak (TK)<\/strong>: Kindergarden<\/p>\n

    Sekolah Dasar (SD)<\/strong>: Elementary School<\/p>\n

    Sekolah Menengah Pertama (SMP)<\/strong>: Junior High School or Middle School (MS)<\/p>\n

    Sekolah Menengah Atas (SMA):<\/strong> Senor High School or High School (HS)<\/p>\n

    Jurusan Ilmu Pengetahuan Alam (IPA)<\/strong>: Specialization subjects of natural science.<\/p>\n

    Jurusan Ilmu Pengetahuan Sosial (IPS):<\/strong> Specialization subjects of social science.<\/p>\n

    Jurusan …\u00a0<\/strong>: an academic major at the university.<\/p>\n

    Diploma 2 (D2<\/strong>): Associate Degree (require two years study).<\/p>\n

    Diploma 3 (D3<\/strong>) and Diploma 4 (D4): in Indonesia, this three and four years of education are considered as a Bachelor Degree.<\/p>\n

    Strata 1 (S1<\/strong>): five years of education. It is equal to a Bachelor Degree in the US and other foreign countries.<\/p>\n

    Strata 2 (S2<\/strong>): Master\u2019s Degree<\/p>\n

    Strata 3 (S3<\/strong>): Doctoral \u00a0Degree<\/p>\n

    – Academic and Religious titles in Indonesia<\/u><\/p>\n

    \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Ir. Dra Hj. Rini Wirawan, MSc, MBA, Ph.D. <\/strong><\/p>\n

    \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Drs. Hendra Sumarto, S.H., M.H.I<\/strong><\/p>\n

    Insinyur (Ir.<\/strong>): \u00a0an undergraduate title in engineering.<\/p>\n

    Doktorandus (Drs<\/strong>.): an undergraduate tile in the social subject. It is originally from the Dutch academic title. The female form is doktoranda (Dra.)<\/p>\n

    Sarjana Hukum (S.H.<\/strong>): an S1 degree in law, require five years of education. It is an equivalent with a Bachelor of law in the US.<\/p>\n

    Master Hukum Islam (M.H.I.<\/strong>): Master of Islamic Law<\/p>\n

    Haji (H.<\/strong>) and Hajjah (Hj.<\/strong>) is written before the name of a person to indicate that the person has completed a hajj pilgrimage.\u00a0 The female form is Hajjah (Hj.).<\/p>\n
