First, you have to choose which \u2018when\u2019 can be used in the context of your sentence. Second, you have to decide how you will convey your message: is it formal or informal? Third, you have to identify in what time frame you are going to refer your message: is it the present or the past?<\/p>\n<p>Here are the samples:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Use &#8216;Kapan&#8217; to ask a question word about \u2018when\u2019 in English.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Kapan Anda pergi ke Jakarta? When will you go to Jakarta?<\/li>\n<li>Kapan Beliau pulang? When is he\/she going home?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><u>Note:\u00a0<\/u><\/p>\n<p>When you use \u2018kapan\u2019, you can leave out the \u2018akan\u2019, which means \u2018will\u2019 in Indonesian as it is understood.\u00a0 The complete sentence would be \u201cKapan Anda (akan) pergi ke Jakarta?\u201d<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Use &#8216;Kapan\u2019 if the question is indirect (i.e. inside a sentence).<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Saya tidak tahu<strong>kapan<\/strong>\u00a0dia pulang. I don\u2019t know\u00a0<strong>when<\/strong>\u00a0they are going home.<\/li>\n<li>Saya tidak tahu<strong>kapan<\/strong>\u00a0saya akan lulus sekolah. I am not sure\u00a0<strong>when<\/strong>\u00a0I will graduate.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Use \u2018Ketika\u2019 and \u2018waktu\u2019 as conjunctions.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Saya sedang mandi<strong>ketika<\/strong>\u00a0dia menelepon saya. I was taking a shower\u00a0<strong>when<\/strong>\u00a0he called (me).<\/li>\n<li>Telepon berdering<strong>waktu<\/strong>\u00a0saya masuk rumah. The phone was ringing\u00a0<strong>when<\/strong>\u00a0I entered the house.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Use \u2018Waktu\u2019 to mean \u2018time\u2019<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Kapan Anda punya<strong>waktu<\/strong>\u00a0untuk bertemu dengan saya? When do you have\u00a0<strong>time<\/strong>\u00a0to meet with me?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Differences between \u2018Ketika\u2019 and \u2018Waktu\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>\u00a0\u2018Ketika\u2019 is used in a formal situation while \u2018Waktu\u2019 is used in an informal situation.<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0\u2018Ketika\u2019 and \u2018Waktu\u2019 are used as \u2018when\u2019 for an event or a state of affairs in the past. However, it is common to use \u2018Waktu\u2019 as \u2018When\u2019 when referring to \u00a0the future.<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0\u2018Ketika\u2019 is used to indicate a hypothetical state. For example,<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Ketika cinta harus memilih.
