This phrase shows the way to compare adjectives in Indonesian. Another example is \u201cRumah saya lebih jauh dari kantor daripada rumah Anda\u201d\u2014\u201cMy house is farther from the our office than yours.\u201d<br \/>\n(Note that the first \u201cdari\u201dmeans \u201cfrom\u201d in the example, while the second \u201cdaripada\u201d corresponds to English \u201cthan\u201d).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Examples:<\/strong><br \/>\nSekolah itu lebih dekat ke Kedutaan Amerika Serikat daripada ke kantor pos.<\/p>\n<p>That school is closer to the US Embassy than to the post office.<\/p>\n<p>Lebih can be preceded by the word jauh (far) to emphasize a comparison.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Examples:<\/strong><br \/>\nBuah anggur ini jauh lebih mahal daripada buah apel itu.<br \/>\nThese grapes are far more expensive than those apples.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Kurang<\/strong><br \/>\n1. \u201cKurang \u201cmeans less, lacking, insufficient or not enough.<br \/>\nIn bargaining, the phrase \u201cboleh kurang?\u201d means \u201ccould you lower the price?\u201d<br \/>\nHowever, \u201csaya kurang mengerti\u201d means \u201cI don\u2019t understand\u201d which also means \u201csaya tidak mengerti\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Examples:<\/strong><br \/>\nKopi ini kurang manis. People use \u201ckurang-lebih\u201d or \u201ckira-kira\u201d to tell an approximate number or quantity.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Se + adjective<\/strong><br \/>\nThe English comparison with \u201cas+ adjective +as\u201d or \u201cthe same as + adjective\u201d is expressed either by \u201cse + adjective \u201d or \u201csama + adjective (nya) dengan \u2026.\u201d in Indonesian. When sama is used, the adjective must be followed by dengan (with) or by \u2013nya and then followed by dengan (with).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Examples:<\/strong><br \/>\nTas ini semahal tas tangan ibu saya.<br \/>\nTas ini sama mahal (nya) dengan tas ibu saya. This watch is as expensive as my mother\u2019s watch.<br \/>\nBambang sepandai Ahmad.<br \/>\nBambang sama pandai (nya) dengan Ahmad. Bambang is as clever as Ahmad.<\/p>\n<p>To say \u201cnot the same as\u201d or \u201cnot as\u2026as\u201d, simply adds tidak, meaning \u201cno\u201d before \u201cse-\u201cor \u201csama\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Examples:<\/strong><br \/>\nKakak laki-laki Anda tidak setinggi Anda.<br \/>\nKakak laki-laki Anda tidak sama tinggi (nya) dengan Anda. Your older brother is not as tall as you.<br \/>\nNegara bagian Maryland tidak sebesar negara bagian Texas.<br \/>\nNegara bagian Maryland tidak sama besar (nya) dengan negara bagian Texas. Maryland state is not as big as Texas.<\/p>\n<p>Paling\/ter- + adjective<br \/>\n\u201cPaling\/ter- + adjective\u201d means the most or the superlative. To use paling\/ter simply, place paling \u201cthe most\u201d or ter-prefix before the adjective.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Examples:<\/strong><br \/>\nCucu Anda pelajar terbaik di sekolahnya.<br \/>\nCucu Anda pelajar paling baik di sekolahnya. Your grandchild is the best student in his\/her school.<br \/>\nLamborgini Aventador mobil termahal di dunia.<br \/>\nLambogini Aventador mobil paling mahal di dunia.
