I swam by myself.<br \/>\n&#8211; Suami saya berangkat ke Jakarta sendiri. My husband left for Jakarta himself.<br \/>\nSendiri can be used before\/after the verb or after the object of the verb.<\/p>\n<p>Examples:<br \/>\n&#8211; Saya sendiri datang. \/ Saya datang sendiri.<br \/>\nI came myself.<br \/>\n&#8211; Kami sendiri membeli apartemen ini. \/Kami membeli apartemen ini sendiri.<br \/>\nWe bought this apartment ourselves.<\/p>\n<p>Colloquially sendiri is often used after the verb instead of sendirian, seorang diri \u201calone, by oneself\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Examples:<br \/>\n&#8211; Dia datang sendirian\/ seorang diri\/sendiri.<br \/>\nHe came by himself\/alone.<\/p>\n<p>The reduplicated form sendiri- sendiri means \u201dapart, separately\u201d.<br \/>\nExamples:<br \/>\n&#8211; Mereka pulang ke rumah sendiri-sendiri.<br \/>\nThey went home separately.<\/p>\n<p>Both sendiri and the phrase dengan sendirinya means \u201dautomatically, by itself, of its own accord\u201d when referring to action by an inanimate subject.<\/p>\n<p>Examples:<br \/>\n&#8211; Pintu itu terbuka sendiri.<br \/>\nThat door opened by itself.<br \/>\n&#8211; Mobil itu bergerak dengan sendirinya.<br \/>\nThat car moved automatically.<br \/>\nFollowing a possessive noun or pronoun, sendiri translates \u201cown\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Examples:<br \/>\n&#8211; Meja dan kursi itu dari rumah saya sendiri.<br \/>\nThose table and chair are from my own house.<br \/>\n&#8211; Ini rumah saya sendiri.<br \/>\nThis is my own house.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Reflexive Phrases<\/strong><br \/>\nA reflexive phrase consists of minimally of reflexive pronoun diri\u201dself\u201d. A minimal reflexive phrase usually occurs as the object of a verb and indicates that the object is the same person as the subject of the verb.<\/p>\n<p>Examples:<br \/>\n&#8211; Mereka menjaga diri baik-baik.<br \/>\nThey look after themselves properly.<br \/>\n&#8211; Tuan rumah memperkenalkan diri kepada tamu.<br \/>\nThe host introduced himself to the guest.<br \/>\nSometimes a transitive verb followed by diri occurs where English uses an intransitive verb.<\/p>\n<p>Examples:<br \/>\n&#8211; Orang itu melarikan diri.<br \/>\nThat man fled.<br \/>\n&#8211; Perdana menteri mengundurkan diri.<br \/>\nThe prime minister resigned.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; minta\/mohon diri beg leave to depart<br \/>\n&#8211; menarik diri withdraw<br \/>\n&#8211; mencalonkan diri stand (for office)<br \/>\n&#8211; mengkhususkan diri specialize (in a certain field)<br \/>\n&#8211; menyerahkan diri surrender<br \/>\n&#8211; (mem)bunuh diri commit suicide<\/p>\n<p>The full reflexive phrase is diri+ possessive pronoun+sendiri<br \/>\nThird person \u201c\u2013nya\u201d corresponds to a plural as well as a singular third person subject.<\/p>\n<p>Examples:<br \/>\n&#8211; dirinya sendiri himself\/herself\/themselves<br \/>\n&#8211; Dia suka (terhadap) dirinya sendiri. He likes himself.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A reflexive phrase can follow a preposition.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Examples:<br \/>\n&#8211; Dia jengkel terhadap dirinya sendiri.
